Starfighter Video

Post by Moth » Sat Feb 17, 2007 8:46 pm

Here is a good video of, I think 9 Starfigthers.

Those General Electric J79-GE-11A's have a scary howl to them, huh?
and those are some brave pilots. The landings gave me shivers, so fast and unstable, what a beast the f-104 is. :?

The landings gave me shivers, so fast
Cool Video, love those smoky old J79's 8)
Those thin stubby wings need a lot of airflow over them to produce lift, thus the high landing speed. Found this at another board for the F-104, doesn't say which model..... "Normal landing speed with full flaps was 175 kts + fuel correction ~ 5 kts for each 1,000 lbs above 1,000 lbs*....usually 185-190 kts, min touch down speed 150 kts......"
One knot is equal to 1.15 statute miles per hour so a landing speed of 185 knots is just under 213 Mph.

Cool video. I do have to agree, those landings are pretty scary to watch. Pretty much looks like they are a controlled crash. Does anybody have an idea what year that video is from?

This aircraft would be one of my dream-craft to own! I agree, the landings on these is fast and can be hard. You have to think that these bird really do not have much of a wing surface so in slow decent there is a lack of lift. Think of this plane as a rocket with short wings! Without the deployment of the chute it would need a longer runway just to slow down from the fast landing. Great video!
