Stuka mentioned "Jarhead". What a waste of time that turkey is. The whole picture can be summed up by the scene at the end where the sniper breaks down and cries because he hasn't shot anybody. Pleeeaase. A war pic without a war.

You want actual desert war, check out the Brit one about the SAS in Iraq. The name of this terrific movie is - "Bravo Two Zero". A true story by Andy Mcnab, played in the movie by Sean Bean.

What else do we have about the 1991 war? "Three Kings"???

And I can't even return the movie cause I removed the shrink wrap!!

Yeah - all I can think of is "Three Kings"

I read a review - can't remember source - but they asked the question - why are the only Gulf war movies parody?

I despise the fact that the director disguised this political movie as a warmovie tempting more moviegoers to see the movie before the word gets out about the message.

I'm kind of suprised that so far we haven't seen miuch or anything about the current Iraq war. We have had some great stuff on TV, like the "Shootout" series on the History Channel. A few of the stories on different battles, mostly small that are facinating, esp with the CG effects with diagrams and following troop movements in Iraq.

I guess we will never see the whole story about the robbery of the Bank of Iraq of hundreds of millions of dollars in cash and bullion. It is, by the way, the biggest bank robbery in the history of the world. I guess we'll just end up with fictional tales , like "Three Kings" or "Kelly's Heros". The true story we won't ever know.......we can't just watch our neighbors, back from Iraq, who have a habit of buying a new Lexus every time the current one runs out of gas

War Movies

Post by lightning2000 » Sat Mar 25, 2006 7:11 am

Hello,
My all-time favorite war movie is Zulu. Dont know if its 100% accurate but when you combine the heroic musical score with the action sequences, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a similarly well-conceived movie.

I thought Band of Brothers was a mini-series, not a war movie. I know its splitting hairs, but thats how I see it. I'd rate Private Ryan and We We Soldiers as my next favorites, if you're looking to combine accuracy with storytelling.

Over There !

Post by MG-42 » Fri Mar 31, 2006 4:18 pm

I'm surprised nobody mentioned "Over There",...a series about the current Iraq war. I think it deserves a place here.

Too many things about "Over There" bother me.

I can understand if they use a Huey because no Blackhawk is available to movie studios, but I can't get over the episode where a sucide car is coming to their roadblock in the middle of the night but the two knuckleheads are going to blows with each other.........amazing. I give our guys far more credit than to pull a stunt like that.

Still, all that said, if a second season comes on, I'll watch.

Gettysburg

Post by Coreyeagle48 » Fri Mar 31, 2006 9:36 pm

Hi Guys

On the discussion of Gettysburg:

I have heard from a teacher at school who was pretty familar with the filming of the movie that the calvary battle on the third day was actually filmed, but never included in the final production of the movie due to the time constraints. I have heard that the original filming put the movie at close to five hours running time, which was crazy and obiviously stuff had to be cut out from the movie.

It is interesting because if you have the movie on VHS, it's apparently the full length movie. I bought mine at the gift shop a few years ago. However, watch the movie on TNT and there are some scenes missing included in that version. One of the scenes includes a disgusted General Lee talking to Ewell, which was never in the VHS uncut version of the movie. There are also some other small scenes that were not included.

It is my understanding the calvary battle, or at least a couple minutes worth, was actually filmed. However for reasons due to time and I guess to keep the movie moving, it was left out of the original picture.

Another interesting tidbit is that the movie was not fimed on the actual battlefield, but on two large farms outside the town. This is where the stupid town wants to put its godforsaken casino too

Blah

Corey

I'm suprised that "Gettysburgh" wasn't released on DVD as a "director's cut" showing the entire movie, not cut for time.

There is certinally a market for a 5 hour long movie as well made as "Gettysburgh". Especially on DVD. If there is a market for a 10 hour show like "Band of Brothers", why not. I'd buy a 5 hour DVD.

I remember the added scenes in "Aliens" I first saw on a cable showing and they included the all important scene of Ripley on the space station and she finds out her little girl has grown up and died of old age. This one scene explains why this tough as nails officer goes out of her way to save a little girl in the rest of the movie. The little girl is very similar to her own daughter. I didn't see these scenes again until years later in the released "director's cut" in the entire series in the box set.

That's what directors cuts are for on DVD's.

Here here TTT.

Maybe he`s waiting to hit us with a Directors Cut version?? I truely hope so :D

As for Aliens, yep the Directors cuts added so much more to the film. hard to see sometimes how the justified cutting pieces like that when they DO actually hold a credible part of the film story arc in it.

I have the VHS of Aliens with the extra 20mins they cut out. Yes, I agree with TTT that the part about Ripley's little girl does add to the story and gives her a reason to save Newt. The other part of the movie they cut out was on the history of the individual Colonial Marines. It gives them dimension instead of just being another "red shirt" victim of the aliens.
I can see where they cut the Colonial Marine parts because it
A-shortens the movie
and
B-builds the tension up as the movie progresses to the final scenes.

Pretty Woman had a directors cut version that came out 10 years after the movie. It had some good parts and some you were glad they took out.

Just got to see "Downfall". Terrific picture, well done and as accurate as I can tell.

Knocked we out with the medical officers driving supplies in an Opel Blitz truck. For me, that's only because I'm working on a 1/6 Blitz, but terrific. :)

Nothing really new in the last few days and alot of the personal details with Hitler, have no source except this secretary.

I did think one scene kind of hard to accept, at the end where this secretary dressed in man's military greatcoart and helmet just walks through this crowd of Russian soldiers with guns at the ready. I can't believe that happened. Military coat and helmet, I believe, she would have been grouped with POW's, it wouldn't be that simple.

This was probably already mentioned..
But it should be mentioned again.

"Glory"

very realistic fight scenes throughout the movie.

I remember sitting in the theater thinking "wow" during the closing credits..

No doubt about it Glory was a great flick - awesome battlescenes great music(haunting and uplifting at the same time) and great sound. In my opinion it was the first war movie where the sound effects blew me away. My only problem accuracy wise is that it makes you think the whole regiment died to the last man when in reality they lost about 45% charging Fort Wagner. Furthermore in the blurbs at the end they mention that Wagner was never taken when in reality the Confederates abandoned it a few months later when Union siege lines got uncomfortably close to the fort.

As for movies depicting Desert Storm - Courage Under Fire has not been mentioned. I know Meg Ryan as a foul mouthed Huey pilot is a stretch, but the opening scene of the night tank battle was pretty cool.

Black Hawk Down - great flick I like that they got MoH winner Randy Shughart's weapon correct in the film. He carried a M-14 because it had better stopping power than the M-16.

Does anyone remember the Tales From the Crypt episode on WW1 called "Yellow" starring Kurt Douglas, Dan Aykroyd and Lance Henrickson. I thought that was well done with a great ending.
