Looking for recommendation for a book that evaluates effectiveness of allied ground attack aircraft in WW2. The closest I have read was in Nicklas Zetterling's book, Normandy 1944: German Military Organization, Combat Power and Organizational Effectiveness.

it was pretty freaking devastating! no need for a book they destroyed everything. just watch youtube videos of the attacks. all the germans could do was cut up trees and put them on their vehicles. they made tree covered little areas on all the roads so they could dip off if they saw a plane. they couldn't concentrate their armor and they could only move their army's at night. and when they couldn't find any german vehicles they shot at cows and farmers so they had nothing to eat. alot of the damaged caused would have been behind enemy lines and as much chaos going on in the german army i doubt many reports ever made it back to the HQ and then saved

The Military has done many studies on the subject. A few are available for free, for example:

"A Case Study in the Development of Close Air Support" http://www.afhso.af.mil/shared/media/do ... 24-035.pdf

"A Comparative Look at Air-Ground Support Doctrine and Practice in World War II". A Combat Studies Institute Study http://usacac.army.mil/cac2/cgsc/carl/d ... mparat.pdf

And" Marine CAS in WW2"
http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a367789.pdf

Couple of others are:

Strike From the Sky: The History of Battlefield Air Attack, 1911-1945 Washington, D.C.: Smithsonian Institution Press, 1989.

The Effectiveness of Third Phase Tactical Air Operations in the European Theater, 5 May 1944-May 1945. Dayton, Ohio: Wright Field, Feb. 1946. Copy in the archives of the U.S. Military History Institute (MHI).

Effect of Air Power on Military Operations, Western Europe. Weisbaden, Germany: U.S. 12th Army Group Air Branches of G-3 and G-2, July 15, 1945.

"From Acts to Cobra: Evolution of Close Air Support Doctrine in World War Two." USAF Air Command and Staff College Student Report #88 2800. Maxwell AFB, Ala.: ACSC, April 1988.

Overall you will find some fascinating opinions on the effectiveness of CAS and the larger argument of who should control it.

Thanks so much for the references. Have you ever looked at Air Power at the Battlefront: Allied Close Air Support in Europe, 1943-45? It's by Ian Gooderson.
