FURY writer/director David Ayer's comments on his inspiration for the movie:

CS: Were there any particular battles or maneuvers that inspired the ones in the movie? Anything you read about that you said, "Oh, this would be good?"

Ayer: Yeah, there's this battle called… there was the Weser River and Second Armored crossed the Weser River and it was the last offensive of the German military. After that, they were 100 percent defensive. It was an interesting time because they lost a lot of tanks, a lot of guys got hurt. You know, there's questions, did they overreach? Again, it's such an interesting time, because everyone's tired. The equipment's tired. The military's tired. They've fought all the way across Europe and the war's going to be over in four weeks. It's not the story of a great battle where everyone can slap high fives and celebrate. It's just people trying to survive, people trying to just not die. It's very simple. It's a very simple movie in a lot of ways, very old school.

Does anyone on this board think that a Sherman can would stand up to a Tiger in the field unless they have a shot from the rear? Other than that the Sherman is a can of sardines.... Jeez, just rah rah sis boom bah.... the reason the U.S. Army took the star off the turret is because it was a perfect aiming point for the Tigers and Panzers....
ya gonna pull them pistols or whistle Dixie

Goldderby.com's prediction on Academy Award nominations for FURY:

" "Fury's" best shot for a top Oscar nomination may actually be in the race for Best Supporting Actor where Logan Lerman is a serious contender thanks to his sensitive portrayal of a rookie soldier reluctant to participate in the brutality of battle. Lerman's performance gives this film its heart and he even upstages the actor who gives this film its spark, muscle and star power: Brad Pitt. Their rivalry may end up getting played out at the Oscars.
Presumably, Pitt belongs in the lead race for Best Actor, but that five-man category is already over-packed with seven frontrunners: Michael Keaton ("Birdman"), Eddie Redmayne ("Theory of Everything"), Steve Carell ("Foxcatcher"), Benedict Cumberbatch ("Imitation Game"), Timothy Spall ("Mr. Turner"), Bradley Cooper ("American Sniper") and David Olyelowo ("Selma"). Pitt gives a strong screen turn in "Fury," but the role lacks the emotional vulnerability and complexity that voters usually seek in that race. Pitt might be smart to drop down to supporting, but, if he does so, he'll land smack dab on Lerman. Either one could end up with the nomination, but it's unlikely that they both could get in."

If you are referring to the scene in the movie with the Tiger I being unrealistic, I can give a bit of insight to that.

***SPOILER ALERT***So when the engagement was in the open filed with 500+ yds between the opposing forces and maneuver was not yet a factor, it was, as you could tell, going very well for the Tiger I. But as soon as that distance was closed and Fury was able to encroach to a distance where in all practical sense a tank's gun sights become useless and things like it's turn rate and turret traverse become very important, the tables turned. As the scene depicted, War Daddy began calling the shots as for all intents and purposes that range did not necessitate aiming through the gun sights. The two shots I believe the tiger got off at Fury before being KO'd were obviously rushed as the Tiger's crew began to panic with the prospect of being flanked. Both rounds caught the Fury's armor at very oblique angles that would IRL probably bounce. Glancing blows saved crews on both sides during the war, and certainly luck played out in that scene. It does not require the suspension of disbelief necessarily as the shots were not precision shots but more like the tank equivalent of firing from the hip at a moving target. Luckily they were in an E8 with the 76mm because if it had been one of their short 75mm compatriots that made it instead, they may not have fared as well even with a straight shot up the tailpipe.***END SPOILER ALERT***

I think the scene was realistic as well. My father told me that Tigers could be killed at close range because their turrets traversed slower than american tanks.

US armor killed Tigers in sciliy and Italy, mostly with side shots. and don't forget the after action pictures from Kursk with all the tigers with holes in their sides (hull and turret) from close shots made by t3/76's.

Of course Hollywood has t dramatize it more to make the point botrh in fear of the beast, skills in the crew, and of course set up for the finally.
