Modern US Vehicle Markings info needed

Post by cranedriver » Thu Feb 11, 2010 9:26 am

I need some input or good source for definition of modern US vehicle marking.

I pretty much understand the vehicle id marks on the front and rear, but have no clue as to what the V on vehicles represent. I have seen the V turned in every position and I have seen it with upside down with a number under it.

Also as far as friendly recognition what is used now other than the infared recognition panels. Are any vehicles painted in a way they can be easily recognized from the air?

I appreciate the help and education :D.

The chevron generally denotes platoon.

Facing Up= 1st Platoon
Facing Right = 2nd Platoon
Facing Down = 3rd Platoon
Facing Left = 4th Platoon

Ok that explains that.

So here is what is on the 1:18 scale Bravo Team Bradley

Side markings is a Chevron facing down with a 42 under it.

So would this be third platoon and still a ??? on the number. (I did find a pic of a 1-4 ADA Bradley serving in the defense of the Bagdad airport it had the same 42 on the side)

Vehicle numbers on the front right and rear left:

1Δ (1st Armored Division)
1-4 (1st Battalion 4th)
ADA (Air Defense Artillery)

Vehicle numbers on the front left and rear right:

B 14 (Company and specific vehicle id #)

So its pretty cool if all these numbers do check out. Please post any corrections.
