Live Auction Hopefully Was a Success For Everyone !!

Post by pickelhaube » Sat Apr 13, 2013 9:10 pm

Hey Guys I have a idea and if the moderators say I can do it, of posting a LIVE AUCTION here on the buy-sale forum .

I am not sure if I will do a 3 day auction or 24 hour.

This could be fun or maybe a huge fiasco .

My plan is to put XD up for auction with the price that I paid for it and let us see what happens .

That way it will sell ( hopefully ) and maybe somebody will fill that void they are missing in their collection.

I am thinking the first auction of putting up one each 1/18th plane and tank , along with one each 1/32 plane and tank.

The auction will be on the post for all to see to keep everything fair and square.

I am trying to make this fun but do remember you guys will be bidding against each other so there will natural competition

SOOOOO...... PLEASE NOBODY GET RUFFELD BECAUSE YOU WERE OUT BID.

I think Sunday would be a good day for the auction if it is going to be a 24 hour auction.

Next Sunday being the first Auction.

Friday Saturday Sunday if you guys want a 3 day auction.

What do you all think ?

I like this idea. I am trying to keep my 1/32 expansion going, sounds fun.

I like the idea but I'm kind of concerned that it may set a new precedence for sales in the BST. Another thing you already mentioned is pissed off members in a bidding war. Just not sure about it if it ends up being a trend. Sorry Pickle, just my 2 cents.

PH,
That's a interesting idea for selling.
Would you be the only seller or could other board memebers sell also?
You need to a final time posted (EST) when the auction would be over.
Then the selling would work like the regular BST, correct?
Nice idea.

As long as you don't impose a bunch of fees and require paypal

Seriously, I know of another site for another completely different hobby that tried this a long time ago and it caused so many issues. There was a great deal of tension between members over it and then there were the ones who thought it was O.K. to bid high in the heat of competition and then change their mind. It caused so many headaches for the webmaster that is was withdrawn.

With that said, you won't know unless you try. Just be prepared for the headaches that may come with it.

I haven't done eBay in years. Not since it got so complicated with paypal and such. Much simpler auctions, like ShopGoodwill, or possibly one here might be fun to participate in. :)

It looks like the moderators are willing to give this idea a try. :D :D :D

As far as other guys doing this I think that it is a great idea as well.

I am willing to take Money Orders as well as pay-pal.

As far as pull out bidders goes ...

I HATE THEM... PLEASE GOD IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO PAY FOR THE ITEM ......PLEASE DO NOT BID ON THE ITEM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had this happen to me on e-bay. The guy who won the auctions ( 3 planes ) e-mailed me that he could not pay. So I sold the items to the runner up then the original guy gave ME A NEGATIVE FEEDBACK

So it looks like I have the green light.

My first auction I am thinking of a 1/18th P-51 or a BBI Zero (white ) and a Panzer IV. NIB

The 21st items will be posted for $39.94 and the Zero for $ 60 The general consensus will dictate which one. I think $60 is what I paid for the Zero . It was bought on line.

As far as the 1/32 scale I am thinking of a Bf-109 E and a Jagdtiger $10 each

Thoughts ?

I think one day only. It would be faster with no wait.

If the item gets bid on it goes out the door.

If it does not get bid on it goes to e-bay the next day.

I will just use the same pics as in " our " auction.

I am thinking posting Later Saturday night and ending about 11:00 Sunday night.

Next week.

I see one major problem. Payment.

Using checks could be a problem for you, considering the scammers we have had among ourselves in the past. Requiring USPS money orders would be a solution but that is a cost, as is using PP unless you send the money as a gift.

Personally I would have no problem with PP or eBay at the moment, but that's me.

Good luck. I would consider digging into my garage for some 1/18 stuff and letting some go cheap to benefit fairly new members if your sale method works.

Nice idea, but think this forum has a too small fanbase to get some serious sales.

Well I am doing this to be fun. If I want e-bay pricing I will put them up on e-bay.

Which I probably will do for the rarer pieces.

I know what these things are worth

All the versions of Spitfires are worth about 3 times that of $39.94 Walmart prices.

So those will probably not be on my " live auction " block.

Not sure PH.

Think it might be more hassle than it is worth, and can see many potential problems, and pitfalls.

Understand what you are trying to do, but why not simply list a set price on the BST.

Just my thoughts, and wish you luck.

My only gripe would be that if your only going to list common items it may not be worth it. I personally would like a chance at any you consider rare before you put them on ebay even if you do have a reserve. A lot of members here have easy to find pieces it's rarer pieces we need. There may not be enough new blood wanting to buy them.

So what happens when you find out the winning bidder is currently living in Bora Bora and wants to wire you international funds with an exchange rate and then the shipping is a nightmare? There are a lot of members that don't disclose their location.

Hope you have a "read me" set of rules with plenty of legal disclaimer stuff.

Again, Good luck :!:

I have never had an exchange rate problem. Paypal makes the exchange so I do not have to.

I have never shipped to Bora Bora but I have shipped to :

USA
Canada
Mexico ( scary )
Brazil ( scary but not as bad )
Japan
Taiwan
New Zealand
Australia
Thailand
England
France
Belgium
Germany
Austria
Switzerland
Italy
Norway
Denmark
Finland

All of the packages made it . The only problems ( the customer's ) were with customs.

Canada and Belgium being the worst.

So yes I will ship overseas as well.

Of course the winner needs to pay FULL shipping and insurance.

I do have a few rare ones but if I list them for $39.94 and they sell for $40 I would want to shoot myself.

The ones that I want big money would have to be listed on e-bay so I can get full market value.

This is an experiment if it works great, if not somebody gets a good deal and I keep my bright ideas to myself next time. :?

What I meant was if you had a price in your mind for a rare one, will you give members a chance to buy before ebay? Like if you wanted $150 for a spitfire knowing that's probably the going rate hypothetically you would give members a chance to purchase it. I only collect 1/32 and using the spit as an example. Some members may pay full price just to add a rare one to there collection.

Maybe I’m being silly but my main concern about this is that it will be the new way for everyone to sell their items. Pick your lowest price and away it goes. Also the high bidder may be someone you would rather not sell to but I guess that would be the seller’s problem.

I like a straight list price then maybe some negotiation. I also like the fact that if I’m the first person to see and respond usually the seller will deal with me first. I’m not into publicly bidding up an item driving the price higher and higher just so my palls won’t think I’m cheap. (I made that part up but it could happen) Now if this were specifically tailored to your customs only I may feel different. I’m not trying to be a drag here. If the moderators are ok with it then there isn’t much more for me to say. It’s a neat idea but not for me.

Jumping in here a bit late, but the auction idea is interesting. I once participated remotely in a live auction for a 21c 1:6 R/C M5 Stuart tank that was MIB. It was an interesting experience, similar to eBay in some respects, but different. Through the online system, I basically put down my highest price and let things go from there. My high price ($200) was reasonable given for what the same item in the same condition was going for on Ebay - and I wound up winning the auction, despite there being 10 or so other bidders that didn't reach my price 8)

My only concern would be how it would be regulated here. I mean, would it just be a free-for-all starting at one price and going up from there in sort of a bidding war or could someone simply come in and plant a high price that no one eventually decides to exceed? Like sy PH listed a 1:18 P-51 for $50 and I put down $200. Would the buyer then be responsible for that high price they put down or would it go for the next lowest price, as like on ebay?
