What is happening with the 144 scale retail market?

Post by ltcbj » Wed Feb 11, 2015 7:02 am

It seems that Dragon hasn't had anything new out in quite a while.
Is Takara/WTM still manufacturing in this scale?
Where have all the retail outlets gone?
The WTM website http://www.world-tank-museum.com/products.html hasn't been updated since 2011.
Everything seems to either be out of stock or the prices are out of sight.

Ground action seems dead, except maybe for resin stuff like Panzer Depot or whatever. Aviation is still kicking though. I am really in to the WWI stuff from Wings of Glory.

The market for Japanese prebuilts of various subjects is a bit of a none event at the moment. however, F-Toys appear to have taken over the World Tank Museum (i.e the original Japanese issues, and not the later US Reissues* )branding from Tomytec and have released two new series in the last year or so . Vol.1 of which was focused on the "Blitzkrieg 1940" period (if you can find some of the 88mm from this release they are worth getting some) and Vol.2 squarely on the JGSDF equipment, with the release of Vol.1 there was some hope of subsequent series going forwards. This is still could be the case if F-Toys follow their pattern of releasing themes in rotation.

Wargmes south (or Arrowhead as its now known) is doing some great things in white metal, and have been working through their catalog and either adding new ranges, or reengineering their range to provide enhanced detailing.

* - i do recall there have been a number of attempts or proposals to relaunch as a wargaming ecosystem this with a new ruleset and miniatures but this seems to have come to nothing...

otherwise, its back to 3D printing and Shapeways (or, CGD/DAMEYA), or Panzer Depot (and even they have gone quiet)
