21st Afrika Korps 88 for those pesky Matildas...

Post by krieglok » Sun Oct 02, 2005 2:53 pm

I was tinkering around in the shop while I was waiting for my Tamyia 1/35 scale PZKW II model to dry when it occurred to me to take out one of my 21st 88mm guns and set it up for desert service. I pulled the tires off, removed to signal cable reels and let loose with the German desert yellow paint. I used a spray can of the Testors variety(feeling to lazy to set up the air brush today) and the results were not half bad. I used some left over decals from a Tamiya 88 and there we go.

That looks really "tough". I was going to re-paint mine just like that too but never got around to it yet. I'm still going to do that plus do another one in like a "France" or "Normandy" camo paint scheme leaving the "field-grey" as it's base coat. This is a good "no brainer" idea for those who do this and not be lazy to wait around for the "re-paints".

I would probably do more if I could find some AK decals to work with. I have a source of dry transfer ones, but I have an easier time with wet sheets. I marked it for the 15th panzer division, battery B. I wasnt sure if they(88s) were under control of the Luftwaffe at this point or not. I will have to do some more research on this. It has 11 kill marks. The AK mark is on a grey green patch to represent the possibility that the gun was marked for the AK before it was painted desert tan. They often masked over the AK symbol if it was there on the grey scheme before they did the new paint job. Thanks for the compliments.

For those of you thinking of doing something ala Krieglok's awesome custom, Build-a-Rama is offering custom painted 21c 88mm guns and Pak-40s in the desert scheme. Krieglok's custom looks better, in my opinion, but the Build-a-Rama version is out there!

Why bother with spending the extra money when you don't have to. It's much more fun to paint them yourself. The way you want'em to look.
