Small Scale Military Headquarters

There are so many nice model out, and coming out in 1/72nd scale. Hobby Master for one, has beautiful models released quite often. Why is this scale so popular? Is it the size? cost? Seem all the good stuff is in this scale.

I see the same thing. Sooo much more selection. Unfortunately, I decided early on that 1:72 was too small for me and I went with 1:48 (I've now moved into 1:32). The really good 1:72 aren't even that much cheaper.

I think it has something to do with it being a popular plastic modeling scale. There is so much available in plastic 1/72 kit form and the popularity spills over in to the collectibles market as well.

During WWI and, especially, WWII, various nations employed models or other representations of aircraft to help their airmen and AA gunners in identifying friendly and enemy planes. Many scales were used, however the British and U.S. forces employed the 1:72nd scale extensively in WWII and this seems to have carried over to the early plastic kits made by Comet and others at the time. In addition, the 1:72nd scale allows collectors to buy relatively small fighter replicas and still be able to find space for larger models such as a B-17. In 1:144th the fighters and most mediums are too small to appeal to the majority of collectors while the 1:48th scale is too risky for many diecast makers and the models ---even of "mediums" ----take up too much space.

I had 3 of the US models I found in a yard sale here in Viera(109,190, and 110) plus photos, papers and such of a former 8th air force who was involved in deciphering Photo Recon photos. I got the lot for free from the man's widow after talking to her for 20-30 mins. Donated the lot to the local air museum, since I had nowhere to properly display the items, and I felt more people than myself should enjoy and learn from them.

The win for me of 1/72 is everything ties together in scale and the amount of material on the market, kit and prebuilt.

I mean you can get a 1/72 Blohm Voss 222 Viking flying boat on one hand, and a M3A3 Stuart V on the other.

The range of subjects just isn't there in 1/32 or even 1/48.

For me, personally, it's definately a cost and space thing. I just sold my last three 1/18 A/C because they've been sitting in a box, undisplayed, because I just don't have room. Instead, I've got the same A/C in 1/72 now.

I got rid of my 1/18 tanks for the same reason. In fact, of my remaining 1/18 armor, I'm probably going to get rid of about half of my remaining collection.

I think it is popular because of the size and variety of subjects available. I have a range of 1/72 scale planes. It is a good scale especially for the bigger planes.
