BF-109E Nightfighter

Post by Moth » Sun Nov 26, 2006 1:39 am

Is 21st Century Toys' model accurate?

I am used to seeing nightfighters with some kind of antenna on the nose or wings but 21st C's Schmitt doesn't have any, is that correct to the real plane?

Thanks for the help

Yup, The RAF's early WWII night fighters adapted from the Hurricane and Defiant also lacked radar.

there was no room in a small single engined fighter to put a radar set. They mostly relied on illumination from the moon, stars, searchlights, ground fires etc (and the good night vision of the pilots). They were directed by ground radar to the approx. location of the enemy bomber stream.
i never met an airplane i didn't like...

Moth,

And to build on the above information, here are some links which could, pardon the expression, shed some light on Luftwaffe tactics:

http://www.lonesentry.com/manuals/tme30/ch10sec7.html

http://www.ww2guide.com/night.shtml

http://www.rafbombercommand.com/tactics ... rfare.html

Hope these links help...the Night Fighter roll, both sides, is VERY interesting "stuff".
