Post by turkish1 » Mon Mar 13, 2017 1:01 am

Investing in gold / NYSE or 1/18 ?
I cannot believe this..

1/18 Blue Angels $1575..ongoing auction
1/32 BBI Phantom $698..ongoing auction

you can see the number of bids.

ebay seller id : isoldit.ks0208

What was the highest price paid for a 1/18 ?

I saw that BBI Blue Angel the other day when it was around $1000. It is way too much for that plane, even MIB. Whoever gets it is going to be royally disappointed, I think...

I have a friend who got one a couple weeks ago (used and for much less than $1000) and he had numerous complaints. The shade of blue is off and is flat; there were uneven markings and stripes; the numbers were stickers. Further, it turns out that the Blue Angels F-18 was basically just a sloppy repaint OVER the standard F-18 tooling. When my friend tried to peel off a sticker on the tail, it took some of the paint with it, revealing the gray paint and some of the stenciling for the Golden Dragons F-18

I was discussing that story with another board member recently and we recalled how BBI Blue Angels F-18 was originally a Badcat Toys exclusive. That may have led to BBI cutting some corners. It was possible Badcat Rob was on a budget, so BBI had to lower production costs by simply repainting existing models and not moulding new product in the blue color.

Either way, it is one of BBI's shoddier products - from a line that generally had excellent QC compared to its competition - and is not worth $1000!

Crazy times and Unbelievable prices!

It is so sad, one single figure starts s around 10 up 40 $ or even crazy than it.

The last wave of 1/18 BBI was in great price .

It's crazy to think that even the $80 -$130 prices are acceptable for items we once paid $40-$50 for... But strangely I have to agree with you Mikeg that if they stay in that $80 -$130 range, I am sort of OK with it. Most of these planes aren't worth over $150, IMHO, due to the poor quality control that characterized many of the 21c planes. We often paid low prices for 21c planes a decade ago, but we got what we paid for and one can shell out $130 for something and wind up with an example full of QC errors and even broken parts. Nothing is worth that!

Not entirely sure if the market is bearing those prices or if that particular estate seller is getting a lot of extra traffic.

That said, there has been a *lot* of product moving lately.

I've paid a little extra for certain holes in my collection, but I always tried to make sure I was buying from a good cause, or filling in a definite hole.

There are still some holes left. I started out as a modern collector...and then the bug bit.

But I've a couple of spitfires, a small squadron of A6M's (I've always adored the aesthetics of that plane), a couple P-51d's and a couple BF-109G2's that light up faces young and old when they come into my study.

I'll probably get around to filling in some of the holes at some point. The big missing pieces are some of the earlier 21st Century pieces. I'm not sure which bf-109E or P-40 scheme I'd want. Same for the Stuka, but at least the Stuka looks more or less correct.

On the bright side, I tried to pick up the pieces I knew I'd really want that seemed in shorter supply before prices went completely insane.

related- sheesh, the 1/32 bbi phantom is going for a pretty penny from that id. That seems...borederline ridiculous. An that's after they took the auction down and put it back up (I thought it polite to save them the hassle of a complaint when they had it up as a 1/18 F-4).

Any one item is worth exactly what someone is wiling to pay. It may be the competitive auction mentality where it becomes more important to win than to actually acquire the item.

Axis has the right of it, I think.

All that said, with all of the items on ebay lately there have been some really great (as in lower than market value) things here and there.

It's no golden age with stacked Walmarts, but it's been kinda fun combing through.

re: Wal-Mart......I could be a (somewhat) rich man. I'm the idiot who visited a WalMart at the end of the XD run during the clearance, and they had a stack of at least 12-15 NKK Spitfires and HueyCobras for $20 each. I only bought one of each.

I got my first Spitfire (118 Sq/NKK) at retail at Walmart about 13 years ago. When I got my second one (610 Sq/DWK) around 2007 from a now defunct online retailer, they were already becoming rare and I was quite happy to have gotten it for $50. The prices for the Spitfires, now in the $200-$300 range, are way too high now...

Those prices are insane but it doesn't surprise me.

About a month ago, I sold a displayed Century Wings 1/72 F-8 Crusader (USMC Shamrocks), had the box, certificate, everything. It has been out of the box for nearly 9 years and got dusty in the Iraq desert too. Detailed description and really nice photos on ebay.

The ending bid was $182. Shipping was $12. Gentlemen from Colorado. I paid $60 for it back in 2008.

Diecast collectors be crazy

I got about $110 recently for a Hobby Master Mig-21 in Chinese PLAAF markings that I'd had since the early days of the Hobby Master line around 2007-2008. I originally paid around $30 for it. It is great when one is a seller and people get into a bidding war; not so great if one is the buyer

Those 1/18 prices are crazy

But if you consider no one will be making these very large, and unique models anymore, can see the prices going up. Way up.

We all know the models were under priced from the get go. By quite some bit.

Don't agree with the prices listed in this thread, but supply and demand, and if you get the right buyer at the right time

Sold some duplicate Badcat F-18's and BBI 1/32 Phantoms for a great profit a few years ago, but nothing close to these prices. Exaggerated as they may be.

Still have my entire 1/18 collection, minus some doubles. 8)

Yeah, there was a BBI 1/32 F-4 Phantom (S1 VF-84 scheme) that went for over $800 recently. That originally cost about $50-$60 and you can still get the S2 VF-54 scheme for close to its $90 retail price and that one has better QC.

For another example, I was recently watching an auction for a 21c P-47 Bubbletop in the Eagleston scheme. (I have one, but this appeared to have better QC than mine and its always nice to have a good example). The plane hovered around $100 for most of the time it was listed, but then jumped to around $230 a few hours towards the end. For something that cost $40 back in the day, that is just too much... Its not a crazy price, but still too much!

Having recently dealt with an estate dealer/re-seller, and from what I hear about the business in general, I'd suspect anything they sell to be highly inflated. Or maybe there ARE people out there willing to spend those prices. WAY out of my price range.

You can still purchase the 2nd version of the 1/32 Phantom -Aiken's Airplanes has them-I just purchased a couple. I had been meaning to for a while but this thread spurred me on to do it before they became untouchable.
