I was messing around with a scale calculation and this happened. I thought it was interesting to see how the scales compare.

Its always baffled me............why produce scales in the same subject matter yet not compatible in scale?
As a young model builder, I built most of Tamiya's WWII 1:35 kits and then went on to Monogram 1/32.
Even back then I couldn't mix the two scales, I'm not a rivet counter but it does bug me.
I guess thats why I'm sticking with 1:18, great stuff being offered in 1:16, but I'm not going there.

That's a really interesting point Normandy. I've wondered the same thing. It would be interesting to know the origin story of each scale. I was talking to Pickel yesterday and he mentioned 1/15th, which I believe was started by Verlinden a long long time ago when he wanted to add plastic models to his 1/15th paper model building. So close to 1/16th yet most of those folks won't use his stuff because it's off by just enough. Others don't care and happily mix it in because they really want that item.

21C could have added to the 1/35th world with their pre-built aircraft and armor, but they went 1/32nd. Another pair of scales where some folks mix it up, and others can't unsee the differences.

I told Pickel I'd been thinking about splitting the difference and starting 1/17th!

Two different people contacted me in the same month asking me to convert the 1:18 FG1250 Panther IR Optics to 1/24th and 1/25th. I wasn't aware of either scale and it was clear that even they cared about the difference between the two enough to need their own versions.

Here is my un-researched stab at a few:
- 1/6th: GI Joe, which was inpired by Barbie?
- 1/15th: Paper Models, then resin due to Verlinden?
- 1/18th: Diecast industry? Star Wars Kenner? Existing collector base, compatible with 3 3/4 figures.
- 1/32nd: ?
- 1/35th: ?
- 1/72nd: Airfix that so many people had growing up then blossomed into a diecast thing?
- 1/144th: Wargaming?

Anyone know the facts?

I tell you , 21st 's rendition of their Hetzer is a 1/32 and they have 1/35 scale wheels on it !!

I was told a long time ago that Tamiya started 1/35th. They wanted a monopoly on a scale different then 1/32nd. Airfix , Nitto, Monogram and a few others were working in 1/32 to attract the 54mm miniature figure market. Renwal and Adam(?) in 1/40 were the first armour models I remember.

Grunt my friend, don't worry about it, people always misspelled my name, so I'm used to

Kenner Star Wars is much more in the 1/20 scale range, same with modern Star Wars. I'd put them there more than 1/18. Hasbro's GI Joes, etc. that utilize that articulation style seem to be more in the 1/18 range. There is some overlap between both though, I've found.

Started out as a good scale for large scale aircraft in small size. Basic kits were first introduced in the late 70s and was a pretty small amount up until the mid 90s. More models atarted showing up. Early 2000's saw an explosion from Japan with many more aircraft being released. While wargaming is a big usage of 1/144th scale aircraft you can now find a huge amount of armor, some ships, and many accessories / upgrades for existing kits. 1/144th has now become a respectable scale (especially when creating dioramas).
