1:16 & 1:18 Sherman Hedgerow cutters

Post by grunt1 » Fri Jan 06, 2017 10:46 am

I've been working on a few sets of Hedgerow cutters in both 1:16 and 1:18 scale. These will be in my Shapeways shop once I have them nailed.

The are different styles of cutters and different mounting options for the various tanks and manufacturers.
- 1:16 M4 - versions Heng Long/Tamiya
- 1:18 M4 - versions are set up for BBI/FoV/21c
- 1:18 M5 - version is set up for BG

Please post feedback regarding preferred hedgerow styles, tweaks to the exiting prototypes shown or general interest is very welcome.

Grunt,
Looks GREAT!
Have any idea on cost and when it will be ready?
Will they fit each brand of Sherman out there? (BBI, 21st Century, Bravo Team, etc.)

Hey Razor! My old detective / cop buddy! :-)

Yes, that's the plan. The one you see above already perfectly fits the Sherman from 21st Century Toys - Ultimate Soldier.

I just need to tweak the mount points for BBI and Fov/Bravo and upload them.

Cost wise, at Shapeways it looks like they'll be in the neighborhood of:
- 1:16 $20 for Heng Long or Tamiya
- 1:18 $15 for BBI / FoV-Bravo / 21C

The cost may vary a bit (Think +/- $1-3) depending on the different cutter designs. Some use more material and Shapeways printing time than others.

Grunt,
I hope the new year is bringing you good fortune. (love the detective/cop reference)
I really like your design on these. The cost is very affordable.
Plus, most of us have several Shermans in our collection from different companies.
Please let us know when you get ready with these.

I'd be in for one for the 21st Sherman. Looks great. Good luck with them. Bob

I am down as well.

I never made one for my M-10 .

Any chances of you making one for that ?

It kind of looks like 2 battle axes coming together and they used them on Shermans as well.

I'm down for one of each scale I think... Beef up one of my 21st Shermies and for a future HengLong purchase!

Thanks guys. These are moving along nicely.

Pickel, for the M10 version, if I remember right, your M10 would fit onto different Sherman chassis or was it specific to BBI/21C/FoV? Maybe how it's attached doesn't matter since you'll just figure it out?

I used the FOV for the body .

But I can adjust what ever you make.

Grunt tossed one of these into an order for me, totally unexpected, and it's amazingly well done. I can tell it's one of his earlier test prints but I'll tell ya what... it won't take me much cleaning at all to make it perfect for one of my 1/18 Shermies. I'm in for one of the 1/16 ones for when I get one of the RC Shermans that are out there.

Hell I could see getting these just to stick on a custom Star Wars vehicle for that matter.

Re: 1:16 & 1:18 Sherman Hedgerow cutters - Style I Done

Post by grunt1 » Sat Feb 11, 2017 8:57 am

I finished these up. Here are the pics from my printer, the Shapeways quality will be a bit better. Each cutter snaps on to the tow hooks or the edge of the cover without any glue. This makes for simple installation, but also easy removal if needed.

** Each unit is different so if you do order one make sure to get the one that matches your tank and scale! **

Nice work! I really like how you designed them to snap to the tow hooks so they can be removed easily, if desired. That makes them much more appealing as I won't have to permanently alter a model to install them :D

I just received my cutters and was wondering about the paint scheme. They were originally made of scrap steel in the field but then fabricated in factories. A light grey under coat with brown dirt and green smears of hedges? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Bob

I'd think anything from rusted metal to a full color scheme to covered in mud and hedges is fair game. :)

Thanks Jesse, I was thinking of going with the dirt brown with some green lichen from model railroading glued on. Bob

I can't wait to see what you come up with. In doing the research for these, there weren't any color photos from the period but I did notice that most re-enactors and modelers went with a coat of paint the same color as the tank and rust as needed.

Zaloga wrote an excellent research article on them which is a great read, but does not mention color that I recall.

I just use spray and brush since I don't have an airbrush. Did an undercoat of the steel grey then brushed on brown and a little green. Gluing the green lichen on covered all the not so good paint so it just looks like some smashed branches and leaves stuck on the cutters. Looks really great on a shelf 8 feet from my recliner. Bob

Rylau, can you post some pics?

Also, for those of you into 1:16 I made these for Heng Long, Taigen and Tamiya as well. The hooks are customized for each type of differential cover so they just snap right on.
