Which of these 1/18 21st Century Planes is most Scarce?

Post by Axis Nightmare » Fri Jul 25, 2014 4:43 pm

I see ads from time to time that say "RARE" in the description or title.

Not an official poll question but...

Was just curious from the longer timers which VERSION of these 1/18 planes do you think is the scarcer....and possibly runner-up

21st Century:

Corsair

Bf-109G

Stuka

FW-190D

Me-262

Thanks! :)

The ME-262 without a doubt the most rare of your list. Runner up? Tough call. Someone else may have a better answer for that one.

Well this is actually a tough question to answer.

Of each of the items that you put up, each one has a most " sought after"

Although not rare, prices have been higher than their stable mates . In my opinion here is my top of the list.

Corsair --- RAF

Bf-109 G --Red Tulip

Stuka --- Winter

Fw-190---Maleski ( spell ? )

Me-262--- Night fighter

My top of the line guess out of all of them would be the 262.

There is nothing rare about any of these aircraft because thousands were made of each.

Some will argue about the Snake Stuka being the most sought after .

Others will tell you it is the worst because the red in the snake should be brown and that is all wrong.

The 21c ME-262 (in either the day or night fighter variants) is the most rare. Runner up would be the 21c BF-109G. I'm seeing a few of the FW-190s on eBay as well as some of the other aircraft.

It kills me that I once paid about $30 for an ME-262B during the famous Monkey Depot liquidation sale of 2008. I sold it for a profit, but then had my un-boxed example break 4 years later and finding a replacement cost me a lot more than $30.

I find it interesting that the Hermann Graff/Red Tulip Bf-109G is considered rare... Its the worst of the 21c Bf-109G toolings. Back in the day, they were all over the western US and my local Wal Marts - and even Hobby Town USA - could not sell that particular plane, even when discounted. I had one at one point, then sold it, then a few years later acquired another, only to sell it again. It always seemed the Gunther Rall version was the rarest of the BF-109Gs. Boxed ones are often listed for over $200.

Would have to agree with tman about the Gunther Rall Me 109.

Don't seem to see many of these around.

I looked it up on the Data Base. Don't remember ever seeing one.

Yeah, they don't seem to show up very often, and are in the Motorworks box and not 21 Century.

Fortunate enough to have two of these, mint in box.

BTW, Axis Nightmare, we have a Confederate/ Commemorative Air Force B-25 in town for a few days.

"Maid in the Shade", and she did see combat in Italy. Saw her the first day she was in town, but working the rest of the time so no chance for a flight, even if I wanted to.

But she looks good 8)

Nice picture of the B-25. I have a photo I took of the exact same aircraft in flight with bomb bay open as my desktop wall paper 8)

She is a beauty. Love those light blue cowl rings. That one has participated in most of the Doolittle reunions here in Ohio since 2010.

Now if we could only have a true 1/18 scale B-25........ 8)

to many people use the word rare to drive up prices most of the so called rare planes have a 500 plane run so define rare rare to me is 1 of 1 or less then 100. i have at least 1 of all the planes listed by members so im very lucky or rare is not all its cracked up to be.

From Merriam-Webster:

rare (adjective) 3: seldom occurring or found; uncommon

A run of 500 planes when a normal run is 5000 counts as uncommon. And when you consider there is likely more than 500 collectors worldwide then 500 is indeed rare.

I collect and have collected many items over the decades and trust me, 500 items that likely will never be reproduced by the original manufacturer can be considered rare, especially as time passes.

No, not my opinion and I probably am not one of those people. The definition of rare is certainly not my opinion. My other statements are based on years of experience in the collecting world - nearly 40 of them, in fact.

hope you do not take any of this to heart i didn't. i love a good go round or banter you make a decent point . but the true real life definition for openion reads they are like bung holes everyone has one and they are full poop.

I don't take anything on the internet too seriously. However, it may be true we all have assholes but not all are the same. For instance, I bet my wife's is nicer than yours. Though, if I weren't straight I might feel the opposite.

I think scientifically, you could present data.
So over the course of a certain time period (the longer the better) you would compare each and every 1/18 plane, and mark how many times that particular plane has been presented for sale (both commercial and the "used" market).
So obviously the planes that have come up less, would be the more scare (The planes that you would have less chance of seeing - purchasing)?

In my opinion, your spelling is terrible.

And the market and individual buyers determine what price they are willing to pay for a model, or anything else for that matter.

If someone is willing to fork out top dollar just because the listing says rare, then " a fool and his money are soon parted".

Rare is a qualitative term. It can refer to the numbers made, or how often these are available for sale.

Many models fall into the second category. Century Wings F-14's are a perfect example. They did 5 different versions of the 1978 VF-84 " Jolly Rogers", each with a run of 1,000. But these rarely come available for purchase, so when they do, command top dollar.

Not sure why you are so hung up with rare in a listing, rudedog

They are right up there, Studly, but they are BBI, and not 21 Century.

And I would most definitely call them rare.
