Post by Jnewboy » Sun Nov 24, 2013 11:00 pm

I would like a camel in 1/18 or as close as possible to pose by my DAK armor along with a few palm trees. Any suggestions?? :D

Schleich would be the best, I guess.
I´ve used a beduin camel rider with his camel for a scene with my DAK Stuka. You just need to armor the rider with modern weapons and some military equipment because original he uses bow, arrows and sword.
If you are interested I´ll send you some pics.

The PTE Camel is great! Its been out in years past with the annual PTE allotment at Big Lots, but I've not seen it this year. Its pretty well-articulated & has a saddle. It can be easily modified to carry all sorts of loads 8)

2 and 1 hump camels don't live in the same regions... I don't know which lives where, but I do know this has come up here in the past because the PTE wasn't appropriate for some scenes... Not sure if N. Africa is one of those scenes.

I believe 2 hump is Asia and 1 hump is Sahara.

Every photo I have seen of North Africa shows the one hump camel.

Thanks for your help guys, the pte camel looks good but I don't like the moveable joints, makes it look like a toy and the reins looks like a rope coming out of its mouth.

The other camel that was suggested is great but at $70 on ebay I will have to wait and try to find it cheaper somewhere.

Any suggestions on Palm Trees?

You can make palm trees with pine cones that have not opened yet. Just connect them together and make the leaves from paper.

I think the "old electrical wire" he refers to (in this country) is BX cable. Great idea.

Two-humped camels (Bactrian) are really rare in the wild, and just live in central Asia.

The variety you'd be thinking of for the Middle East / North Africa are Dromedary - one hump. A silly little mnemonic is a B (Bactrian) on its side looks like a two-hump, and a D (Dromedary) like a one-hump :)

Anyhow, for whatever reason the much more common Dromedary is hard to find in ~1:18 vs. the Bactrian! Papo and Schleich both make both, I think - but they'd be closer to 1:20. Safari Ltd. is another manufacturer that makes one.

For palm trees, another option is fish tank decor! I've found a number of pretty good sized palm trees in the fish tank decor aisle of many big pet shops (or ebay/online). And just in general, you'll find some oddly usable stuff for 1:18 there.

Now is the time to be paying attention to the nativity figures in all the stores.
Just glancing at some on the way by, they seem to scale anywhere from 1/24 -1/18.
The camel size could be a relative thing maybe and certainly palm trees can vary.

I might have seen possible candidates at Walmart last week but Big Lots, Michael's and Lowe's all have figures that might work.

I found another nice palm tree tutorial. It's for 1/35, but it wouldn't be hard to scale up to 1/18.
