Questions about 21st Century 1/18 P-47 razorbacks:

1. What are razorbacks selling for these days?
2. What are the rarest, most sought-after razorbacks?

........ Razorbacks or just P-47's in general ?

An ebay search conducted today is showing NIB XD P-47 razorbacks mostly around the $150 mark, which I would expect. One is at $224. The rarest version (I think) could be the second version of the "Checker Tail" aircraft, which had the proper markings and noseart. The first version of the same plane (which was the first P-47 released at Wal Mart) may be the second most rare, but has inaccurate markings. The "Jabo" version and "Donnie Boy" seem to be most common. "Peg O My Heart" and "Blond Angel" are more rare than Jabo and Donnie Boy, but I see them more than the Checker Tail, in the event I look for this plane.

I really should snag a "Donnie Boy" sometime as its early-war solid OD paint scheme is nice, but I always keep holding back. The XD P-47 razorback is not that great of a tooling. I personally rank it down there with the P-40, S1 P-51, and Bf-109E. The oversized canopy and cockpit, the massive grooves behind the cockpit, and other toyish details all really detract from it. I got one in the "Blond Angel" livery in 2003 and have never truly felt the need for another after all these years I liked the bubbletop version much better and have two of those (though it still has accuracy and tooling issues).

....... well if you're not going to answer and just lurking and since we're just gonna' talk P-47's in general then ,

I'd say the OD Checkered Tail white #17 w/ Nose Art ... which I picked up one here MIB from a fellow board member at a more than fair , really decent price. Absolutely Flawless , QC issue free too. One of the best examples in my AC collection.

Next I'd say , "Peg O' My Heart" , Eagleston & Eileen . Those are my picks.

Thanks for the info. I just got a Motorworks "Peg O' My Heart" on ebay for under $53. I don't know anything about the 1/18 razorbacks, so I wasn't sure if I got a good deal or not. The seller said it's "used"--but he added the box is not in good shape, but the P-47 has never been removed from the box, so hopefully the "used" refers to the box and not the model.
At least it has an antenna that the 1/18 P-47Ds don't have.
After I bought it, I found out the fighter squadron was based in North Carolina just before deploying to England so it's great for my NC collection.

Tmanthegreat really nailed most of the flaws in the P-47D Razorback that would make the difference between a toy and a scale model. I am currently working on an improvement project (off and on) for a Razorback. Notice, I didn't say "correction" project as that term is overused when it will be nearly impossible to "correct" all the flaws but when finished will be much closer to an accurate scale model. It is a huge undertaking. Fortunately the wings are the best part and beyond the canopy, the general shape of the fuselage is good. The gear covers are two piece and the bicycle width tires will be replaced by wider ones. I don't have to worry about the toy features of retracting for this project which is why the gear on so many 21st c. planes is so terrible. I'll probably saw the nose off to fix the cowl flaps molded in look. And of course this all means a repaint.

What about the Huckle De Buck? I don't think that I ever saw one out on the East Coast when new. I did get one from a member here, but I would really like to find one still in the box. I just cannot come off the $$$ they are going for on Evilbay.

Since I didn't see them out east, I would place them as high on the rare scale.

I picked up a couple of huckles at a local walmart near here and traded them to a etailer for a couple of early 18th spits I couldn't find around here - I didn't keep one for myself, though.

The Huckle De Buck is definitely the hardest to find now P-47 razorback version. The checkertail is easier to find but as mentioned the nose art version in the Ultimate soldier blue box is rare. Lots of P-47's razorback came in the red motorworks boxes. I got a Huckle in the green motorworks box. I prefer the Ultimate soldier box but Peg and blonde angel I have only seen in the motorworks box. Anybody else have box preferences for their 1/18 collection?

It depends on the box "gliderdwm" but prefer the Ultimate Soldier / 21st.C box myself. The only exceptions are the AC that came in the MotorWorks boxes. For instance , the Schneeweiß Stuka . It has a couple a different + a few more markings on the one in the MW box than the 21st.C issue for some odd reason. Quirky stuff like that , that made & still makes collecting fun & interesting.

Have to agree with Tman.

Not a fan of the Razorback. Just looks wrong, particularly the canopy. Have Jabo, and wouldn't bother with another.

Bubbletop is better, and have "Eileen". But still not a good 1/18 representation of the P-47.

I think "Peg O' My Heart" is the best 1/18 Razorback paint scheme because of the D-Day stripes and olive drab paint which reminds me of the P-38 "California Cutie".

The first one I bought was from EBay and the previous owner had painted the canopy OD to match the rest of the aircraft. I think that it looks far better than the factory no matter it is authentic or not. I have actually gotten a couple now to have an original version and my painted canopy version.

Is the blue canopy authentic?

I've seen only black&white photos of the real "Peg". The only color photos are computer simulations which may not be realistic.

I have three Razorbacks:

Peg O My Heart
Jabo
Checkertail

Peg O my Heart is a nice one, the blue canopy is kinda funky (don't know the history behind that) and while I like the event itself, I prefer planes without the D-Day stripes.

Jabo almost looks Pre-War, think I picked it up for like $25 somewhere, could have been online.

I have to say out of those three my favorite is the Checkertail... it's not the one with the nose art, but I got it for $45 on ebay.

The one I really want has eluded me, and the prices have kept me from further buying.

I've got a Donnie Boy that I'd like to sell eventually. I was going to post it when I finally got a decent 1/32 replacement, but alas, that never came. And funny, unlike everyone else, I like the razorbacks more than the bubble canopies on the P-47, which is why I don't have a 21C 1/32 version of any scheme. Guess I just preferred the early escort look of a Thunderbolt rather than the ground attack D-Day versions...

If someone really wants it on this forum, shoot me a message and I can offer it at a much better deal than the going rate on ebay. I should warn you it's got a broken pitot tube and antenna, even though they are clean breaks (I glued the pitot back but not the antenna figuring it would get shipped eventually). Every other accessory and the pilot is included....

1:32 was $15, got almost every one of the P-47 Bubbletops there, but 21stC never made a Razorback in that scale. Too bad I'd have bought them all too.

Scored a few of 1:18 Bubbletops @ $40 or less at Walfart though.

Strange I never saw any Razorbacks at Walmart. Distribution I guess, plus I missed a lot of the Motorworks red boxed planes and had to find them later elsewhere. Luckily got a few before they tripled in price.
