1/18 King Tiger to Start in August. OK Scratch That Oct !!

Post by pickelhaube » Thu Jun 28, 2012 5:55 am

OK Guys,

It has been a long wait and I have heard from reliable sources that the King Tiger will NOT be done by Algo.

Very reliable sources

So that being said I will have a starting date in August. HOPEFULLY :D :D :D

It will be done like my T-34 kit . The bottom hull is a semi flat kit The top hull is in one piece.

But because the King Tiger is so big I may have to make the top hull as a flat kit as well.

But , I WILL BUILD IT UP INTO A FULL ONE PIECE HULL .

The mould for a full hull will be huge with huge amounts of RTV . So that is why I am thinking the flat parts.

Also I will be making the Henschel, Porsche and Jagdtiger variants.

Yes the Jagdtiger will have the longer hull

I am not sure about zimmerit . I think casting that would look like it will be shot with bird shot.

So i am pretty sure I will make the Porsche turret smooth .

So all you guys who have gone to bed wishing for a 1/18 scale King Tiger , your dreams will come true !!

I just hope I can get caught up on all of my back orders by then. :?

Are you guys ready ? :D

You mean the Sdkfz 251 ?

Grunt has taken on the vampire scope.

Yes I will do the Hanomag back date first.

May I suggest a few more modest projects?

Like converting a half track to a Scout Car?

Or converting a Panther or Tiger to a Judgpanther or Judgtiger?

Or converting a Tiger base to a Sturmmorserwagon?

Or converting a PzIV to a recovery vehicle?

Your time might be well spent without spending a year or two of your time and aggravation on a ground up KT.

The KT would be great but seeing as how alot of us already have one of the very nice 1/16 KT's already on the market most of us might be hesitant to investing the long wait and serious bucks in a 1/18 KT.

Just my 2 cents.

if you're going to do any zimmerit, it would be most appropriate on the Porsche turreted version, as i believe all of them had it. The Henschel variants most did not.

As far as TTT's comments, i would say it's a good vehicle to make but, if anything at all is going to come out in the way of 1/18 armor, it will be a KT. So, doing smaller, faster projects might be in your best interest for now and you can re-address the KT in a year or so, to see what happens in the world of 1/18, which is starting to come back to life.

Please, no more full kits. Keep them fast and less expensive with desirable upgrades to current models.

If I were you PH I would be leery about undertaking such a project with something on the market "prebuilt" and very close in size and RC for less than the kit is going to cost... Are you planning on doing full builds or just kits????

Is Grunt going to do a set for the 251 only?? what about the panther???

Ok one guy for , five guys against.

Not the margin I had hoped for.

This is a 1/18 scale forum, not a 1/16th scale.

I plan to do a kit only but I am sure that I will do some full builds.

As far as the vampire didn't they use the same set up on both the Panther and 251 ?

Maybe the mounts were different but I am sure that the scopes were the same.

Anyway Grunt has them in the works .

Again I have heard from a reliable source that ALLGO WILL NOT BE BUILDING THE TIGHER II.

I will still do mods as this is being built.

Is Allgo alive in any stage?

I was assuming Allgo was history.

Never do Zimmeret on a cast. Some would like it with out, and the others can add it. (Not hard)

I was not planning to do the zimm. Like I said it would probably look like some one shot with bird shot.

As far as price goes the T-34 sold for $300 I sold about 30-40 of them at that price.

The K2 is bigger ( much bigger ) and has a lot more wheels ( about double )

So I was thinking around $350 .

I am shocked by the reception as well, but I have to admit I am surprised you are taking on such a big project after how upset you were by the HO 229 and if I remember correctly the T-34 as well. I know you will do a great job, and I will definitely consider one.

I'm still in at $350! Seriously guys....HOW can you have all this armor and NOT have a KT ?? I haven't bought any of the PH kits yet (only because i have no modeling skills) but from everything I've seen, they are first rate - so that all being equal - if I'm going to have a KT in my collection, I would be honored if PH created it.

The T-34 did not take as long as the Horten and with the experience Pickel has gain i don't think this project will be nearly long as we think.
With 21st century and All Go abandoning the Tiger II project,Pickel will be our last hope to get this Tank. And lets not forget that with the same molds he will make the other two tanks by simply making the turrets.

To a armor collector like me a King Tiger is as important as the Horten is to a airplane collector. Pickel made the Horten and many people today are very happy with it.

I wanted so much the King Tiger that i bought a 1/16 RC version. It all ended in a BIG,and i mean (BIG) disappointment. The turret of the King tiger was nearly as big as the Hull of my 1/18 Tiger I,not to mention the height difference. I sold the 1/16 Tiger II immediately.
My only regret is that i did not took a picture of the two side by side to show it here now.

Pickel, I'm in for your 1:18 King Tiger (Henschel) 8)
As for Zimmerit, those who want it can order 1:16 and trim it to fit. http://www.artistichobbies.com/products.php?cat=96
Or you can do it yourself with putty or spackle.

I had envisioned a whole warehouse full of these and ready to ship.........

........oh well. :? It's been sooooo long a wait, your sources must be right.

I'm looking forward to a Pickelhaube King Tiger to add to my collection.

Count me in for a 1:18 King Tiger (Henschel turret) at $350. Love to have one in this scale.
Will start putting money aside now each month just for this project.

This is one that will be a must have, I have talked with PH a few times about this project and I know for a fact this is one he has wanted to build for a long time.

Knowing and seeing his past builds, this will be one great King Tiger, now the only question is which version :D

I would also be in for a King Tiger with the Henschel Turrett - also like the Jagtiger idea as well.
