New 21st Mustangs

Post by vulgarvulture » Wed Oct 19, 2005 5:57 pm

From BCA:

UPDATE 10/19/05: Two versions are scheduled for a January 2006 delivery:

#10184 S1 P-51D Mustang "Ridge Runner"
#10184 S2 P-51D Mustang "Petie 2nd"

We are told that these first new Mustangs will NOT have functioning wing lockers but are still nonetheless exciting additions to the fleet.

Can't wait!

Im really curious to see how these compare to the BBI one. I held off on buying a BBI repaint as im gonna run out of room for stangs. Really would hae liked to see the ammo bays on the wings, but if they somehow manage to beat the bbi one ill be ecstatic

Wow! Now that is news!! No gun bays.... mmmmmm Oh well! I usually don't hang my planes up with them open anyways, hehehehehe.... I never really cared for the gun bays in the first place. I am really looking forward to these things, though. The remodeled 21st P-51 has a far better shape than the bbi one IMHO. With another 352nd FG and the very first 4th FG plane in the mix, I'm definately game!! Thanks for the heads up!!

I can answer the Gun Bay question. When 21st decided to go ahead and re-tool the P-51 they focused mainly on the shape of the plane and moving control surfaces. They were pretty deep into prototyping when 21st really got excited and said "Hey what would really be cool is if...." Thus the Gun Bay idea was born! However the soild wing had apready been created and was further along in the process. 21st made the command decision to not hold up the P-51 production waiting on the Gun Bays so now there will be a running change. As a result S1 and S2 will ship with solid wings and S3, as I understand it will ship with Gun Bays from there on out! Personally I welcome having Both versions and I like having choices! I am looking forward to both. I have also been told that the new P-51 is looking very very good! Roy is pretty picky and as an expert he always looks for ways to improve the models. When I last asked him I said how is the P-51 looking his answer was "you know, I am actually really pleased with how the final version is shaping up!" In perfectionist speak this means.... It's looking AWESOME! 21st is sending me a set of progress pics next week. They want fans to see how it is coming along! -Can't wait!

Personally, I'm kind of getting P-51 out. A new line of airplane would be most welcome.

I just love the P-51 in general but I was hoping for some cooler nose art. Maybe a pinup, but these planes just look so similar to all the others. :? I guess I’ll wait and see them in person.

When they first announced a retooled Mustang I was all excited. I thought I was going to be getting a B model. I am kind of washed out on Ds. Don't get me wrong; I will buy one more if the livery is cool. And yes, series 1 from 21st on the D model pales in comparison to the standards of their newer stuff. But, both companies have done the D. We need a B (especailly if the put one out in Don Gentile's mount).

I agree about getting tired of seeing retooled D models. If we are going to get another Mustang, please give us something different like a B model.

Hey you won't get any push back from me on getting a B model... But to be honest. There will always be room in my collection for superior re-tooled airplanes. I held the most recent plastic prototype from 21st in my hands last week! The older stangs simply do not compare to this new P-51! It is one sweet model!

I too am sort of tired of Mustangs, not that I don't love them, I'd just like to see more new stuff. I do however agree with TKO. There is always room in my collection for models with superior detail and accuracy. I think the 21C mustang will provide just that.

That being said, I know when I see the new 'Stang I will have to have one.

I would like to see a Red Tail mustang from the 332nd FG (Tuskegee Airmen) as a re-paint.

Maybe as part of the Legends series, or just a 'regular' repaint instead. Great historical significance of this group for many reasons.

21st or BBI would serve history well to help continue promote recognition of this group.

I did not know of this until now:

Oct. '05: Film mogul George Lucas says he is eager to leave Star Wars behind and start work on two new projects - World War II action adventure Redtails and the next installment of the Indiana Jones story.
Since Star Wars first hit cinemas in 1977 the franchise has been massively successful, but Lucas has had enough and wants to explore other ideas he has developed over the years.
He says of Redtails: "It's a story of African-American fighter pilots. They were the best - the only escorts in World War Two that never lost a bomber. It's pretty inspiring

So, 21st could do a joint-marketing deal in connection with the movie.

I've got it all figured out. Piece of cake.

my "Killer" P 51 was my first 1:18 purchase and i am still amazed by it ! i can't wait to see more of the new 21st BBD but on the pictures several problems are clearly visble : landing gear too canted; toyish looking exaust nozzles and wings ... hope theses problems are just on the prototype ! due to size i was decided to have only one model of each airplane (picking the best one ...) but now i am hesitating after buying a 21st cobra helicopter and PPK spitfire... can't wait to have some "experts" comparing both ... Wink

looking at pix of new 21st P-51D, it is a must have fore me because of the Aero Products un gloved prop.
that means they can do both Ds & Ks. and with a Dallas hood ,which could be made in vaccuum formed plastic. the possibilitys are limitless,
even USAF Korean war F-51Ds.

according to 8th airforce sheets the only major difference between P-51D & P-51K was 11'2" Hamilton Standard gloved alumium prop on "D" & 11'
hollow steel Aeroproducts prop on "K".
according to pilot reports in WWII the HS responed quicker. but in test buy Dept of Army there was no difference in performance

they're about 1/12....a hair smaller. There's a fairly good variety available. They look good but are r/c kits and will thus have compromises.
i never met an airplane i didn't like...
