Fw-190 A Modification in 1/18 Scale

Hey Guys,

I have been in the shop cleaning up after the Horten .

I am also gathering more e-bay fodder and I see that I have a bunch of Fw-190s.

I was thinking I know I have talked about the Fw-190 A ( short nose ) and I have made one in the past.

The Fw-190s are starting to creep up in prices, so maybe this mod may be a thing or idea of the past.

Jack of Skyjerks sold his mod for $160 I think it was the nose only with a more realistic tail rudder.

If I were to do this mod I would do a correct nose, prop and spinner. Something Jack did not do.

If the guys who would get this mod would you all prefer the nose modified piece or prefer a full fusalage ?

If I were to do this mod ( it would be next year ) they will TENITIVELY SELL FOR :

Nose, spinner and prop $85

Full fusalage shell with prop and spinner $160.

Another option could be for me to essentially copy the 21st Fw-190 with a few modifications to bring it closer to scale.

A full Fw-190 A ( kit ) would sell for around $300

The 21st Fw-190 D's are selling for $150-$250 new in box on e-bay.

I DO NOT THINK THAT I WOULD OFFER A FULL BUILD.

BUT IF I DID, IT WOULD BE FOR $600-$700.

When I started the Horten full build I was thinking of Jack's pricing of $750 was CRAZY!!!!

But after doing a bunch of full builds. @ 40-50 hours each that price actually was not CRAZY.

I hope a bolt of lightning does not come down from the heavens and hit me, but for once Jack was right.

Of course taking peoples money and running was not right .

Your input is welcomed.

Hey Matthew-

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a Fw-190A in my collection.

Given our recent Ho 229 discussions about the time investment, cost, and what that translates into the ROI I would suggest that you do the following:

Nose, Spinner, & Prop for $85. I don't think that the skills required to graft one onto an existing 190 is too steep a learning curve. It keeps you out of hot water on full builds and complete fabrication. You get to make some mod parts that have a higher yield of profit and we still get a 190A option.

I would suggest for those wanting full builds- Supply your own Dora, ship it to Matthew and let him Give you a quote for full build and desired paint schemes... Perhaps you can narrow it down to a choice of 1-3 schemes? This way you can have the ability to flex on price if you need more dough to cover build and production costs.

You can count me in for a Nose, Spinner, & Prop kit.

Would really like to see a A8 version. This was the most widely produced version and this is the scheme I want to do:

Count me in for at least the parts for a conversion.

I would pay $100 for the nose, spinner and prop kit. The rudder did not change though you do have to delete the tail extension plug on the D. The correct canopy would be great!! and I would be happy to pay more if the kit included it :D

BTW I think Jacks kit also came with some sort of landing gear mod, not sure what that is though...

Just to be a "downer".

Sounds like a lot of money to convert a D to an A.

Even if doing it yourself, with a PH 'kit", $100. Plus paint, supplies, knowledge, and skill.

Really do appreciate the offer, PH, but I prefer the D anyway, and would rather have it custom painted, rather than going for an A version. But I do get what you are thinking about doing. And would be a select few who would have one of these.

Good for them, but too rich for me.

No Jacks did not come with landing gear.

I am not sure of the canopy details but I think they were all basically the same.

I am not interested in doing them if they were different.

Canopies are just tooooooo much of a pain to do for slight differences.

Now when the time comes I will do a P-51 canopy mod .

But this is about the 190.

I would much rather do the mod kit only than a full fusalage.

If you have the right parts all you would have to do is a little slicing and dicing.

1. Cut off the nose and put my mod on.
2. Cut off the tail extension. There are some panel lines were you have to make the cut so that makes it easy.
3. Cut off the vertical stabilizer extension. I made my mod about 6 years ago and can not remember how much to cut off. Maybe a 1/4 inch.

That is about it.

But will people be willing to cut up there $100 plus model ?

Well Im game! for sure, at least two kits....

vertical stabilizer extension is easy to cut off as their are also panel lines to follow.. :D

The canopy is no big deal but would just be really cool, the A's were a little more boxy with sharper corners than the bubble or "blown" D version.

I bought a Fw 190 specifically to convert to an A model. Say the word Matthew and you can have my deposit

if you want to do an A then you'd have to make a canopy but the ground attack, late war F's had the same canopy profle as the 21c D has.

I have one of the Skyworks mod kits. It came with a replacement cowling, cooling fan, exhaust stacks (X3), replacement main gear legs, and rudder.

I stand corrected

My mod will NOT have the landing gear.

He should have spent his efforts on a correct prop and spinner.

Yes! I'm in for one of the conversions whichever way you go. My donor butcher bird awaits your stellar efforts! I would like to see a complete fuselage with the correct access panels and vertical stabilizer etc for the an earlier (A-7/A-8) and I would definitely buy it but if that requires too much time and effort a conversion kit is still needed! :D Would you consider adding the extended length ventral drop tank mount seen in the above profile? That's actually the "Sturmbock" version I'm looking to model with the late armor mods around the cockpit.
I bet if you post pics of the one you did it would gen up some real interest!

I would be in for 2 maybe 3. I have spare 190s that I bought thinking that I would get one from Jack. He sent a quote right before the poop hit the fan. Good thing that I wasn't quick to respond.

Dude you dodge that bullet :D :D

It looks like there is still a lot of interest in this mod.

I still have my original cowling prototype but the prop and spinner are long gone. That would take about a day or so to remake. Then moulds .

I need to get caught up on things so hopefully toward the end of the year this could become a reality !!

Outstanding news! I too was real close to pulling the trigger on the Skyworks set when he stopped responding to E-mails. Glad I waited. I will now begin the tail and fuselage modifications on my retro FW project.

6-14-12: Official start of project- Removed canopy, tail section, rudder and fuselage extension. Started using a pencil to notate and mark necessary mods.

I would be interested in it, I like the look of this version better. How hard would it be to make a A6M3 Zero nose cone?

Well I guess it would be a whole nose and cowling mod like the FW-190. But everything else seems to be the same. The stabilizer tab could be shaved off easily.
