Enough to make you weep.

Post by JollyRoger » Tue May 22, 2012 7:07 pm

A similar post might have been listed before but I do not remember seeing it. Anyway I listed a post on the 1/32 side about a new 1/48 scale Bf109-G using 21st Century molds and the Walmart that it was found in. Which made me think of the story many years ago when one night my son called me. He was at this same Walmart and said they had 1/18 21st Century airplanes on clearance. He was holding "4" Tulip nosed Me-109's and I do not remember how many Mig-15's for $20 each. ........Right $20 each. Then I said nah, we'll pick them up another time. We do not discuss this story anymore.

A pox? That's a little strong.
More like, may your house be inflicted with a little upset stomach.

All I can do is add to the misery.

Same scenario but Snake Cobras and M-113s stacked to the ceiling $15 each.

I passed

Later on they had the R/C M-113s $5 each . I PASSED ON THOSE AS WELL :( :( :(

You guys...

It wasn't that long ago, in the days when we used to go hunting for 1/18 in TRU's and Wallyworld's, that my favorite hunting spots were the old TRU's where stock was piled on shelves along the walls out of sequence with their toy catagory..... and in one very old TRU in Elizabeth, NJ, I found a pile of 21C 1/18 Command Cars on clearance for $2.50 each. I piled a cart as high as I could (if memory serves me right, I had 8 or 10) and checked out, at any second waiting for the checkout tomato to say this is a mistake.... but she didn't. I used them for gifts and trades for years. Still got one left.

Ranks right up there with my story about the 1/1 M-37 owned by this old guy in my neighborhood who rarely drove it and then died and his wife put a 4 sale sign in it. I called her and went to see it. She says her son says something is wrong with the trannie and just wants it gone. I offered her $250 without cranking her up, just on the condition of the body. Her son says "Take it Mom, it's a piece of S**t". I bought it and my son pops into it and it cranks right up. The truck inches slowly into the street we started home. My son reaches down and takes it out of 4 wheel drive and blam, she speeds up. Had that truck for years, best M-37 I ever bought. This lady's dopey son never knew the truck was in 4 wheel drive. I went back and tried to give her more money (in those days I was honest....) but she refused to take more. "A deal is a deal, we're both happy, I never liked that truck and I'm glad it's gone."

Different strokes for different folks.

My local Wal Marts always seemed to lag behind those in the midwest and south in terms of XD products they got in. It was very rare that I saw the mythical "piles" of anything, except a few occasions: 12 BBD P-51s and Huff F-86s at one store, a pallate of 60+ halftracks & Pak-40s at another. Usually it was just bits and pieces - and there were NEVER any Avengers (still bitter about that 5 years later :P )

There were tons of the Hermann Graff (Red Tulip) Bf-109s that sat for ages to the point the impeded newer releases. I only ever saw them discounted to $30 from the original $40. Actually the FW-109D9s sold better, lol. Funny that is one of the more costly 21c '109s now.

The item that I really kick myself for not getting is the Tuskeegee P-51. I picked one up at a local TRU for a board member, then decided to get one for myself. I opened it at home and was assembling it, but there was some sort of defect and the wings wouldn't screw into the fuselage correctly. I then decided I had enough 1:18 P-51s (I had 6 from all makers at the time) and so I took the plane back. Big mistake given that they are not easy to come by now.

You guys had it so good. Here in Australia we never had anything like that - everything was always expensive, and not much of it.

I hear ya Paul.
I've only seen two specialist hobby stores here in NZ that had at the most 4 XD toys (and they would be random items, a stuka and a humvee for example).
I've actually had more than one dream, where i've walked into a toy store and they had 1:18th toys by the shelf load. Then I wake up and realise it had all been a dream.....damn it

I can't see how 21C could do better with 1/18 vehicles. OK, they could have brought out new models and maybe correct the errors that they had made.

On their 1/6, right up to the end, they were making better and better uniforms and especially their head sculpts were getting super, far away from their Hasbro GI Joe look alike faces they made in the beginning.

21C made mistakes making slightly smaller scales for their Abrams, and just gearing their HUMMV RC. Too stinking fast..... I had big hopes for them right up to the end. Too bad....

Since you live pretty close to my area, Jnewboy, I have to ask, which Wal Mart was that? None of the Fresno Wal Marts ever had Avengers and I never saw them in Sanger, Selma, or Dinuba. Didn't get as far south as Visalia at the time... Fresno did get Spitfires and FW-190s, though.

For me the biggest regret is not having bought the special F-18 at badcataviation.com in 2004/5 the blue angel one was at 75 us $ and i was thinking at the time it was CRAZY !!!!

Now I saw a Blue angel gone for 800 !!!! it could have been the best investment of my life !

(For the little story i get one Blue angels in 2007 for 100$ without box and is one the most expensives one i got. I think i have one model of each 1/18 plane-copter on the market and bought all between 2004 and 2007)

I passed also the black F-18 because of not so real paint (it would have been nice for a tomcat) and now i can see it's one of the most sought after !!!

The point is that i bought 2 spitfire in 2005 and one is still in it's box !

Price for both 2x25€ = 40 US $ !!!!!!!

you've got a saying in English : "thoses were the days !"

Target once sold those 1/6 SOTW Jeeps for only $9.99. I cleared the shelf. At Walmart, I did pass on those 1/32 Italian fighters and I returned this huge 1/10 ( ? ) M1 RC tank ( $50 ) which I regret so much.

Not 1:18 but 32x from back when I collected mainly XD. I stopped at a WM I usually never go to and they had a big section with row after row of 32x vehicles piled high. Tropical PZIIIs, Whirbelwinds, Ost Winds, Stugs, Panthers, Tigers, Brumbars, Opels and more. They were marked down to like $5. I passed and I still hate myself. lol.

My dumb mistake was passing on NKK and DWK Spits stacked 5 high at one Wal-Mart, $20 each. And I too passed on the $15 snake Cobra's and $15 r/c gray panzers. :(

I should have kept that second BBI Apache when they were only $30 at Target - and picked up a few more of the other items as well.

Its funny that a couple of posts mention dreams about the hobby. Serious as a heart attack when I say I have this recurring dream (or nightmare as it were) at least once a month about going into a store and finding the mother lode of all the things I collect. These are not just regular items but prototypes and ultra rare items. None of the things there actually exist except in the dreams but what the heck, that makes the dream that much better. Couple of months ago in this dream, I didn't find a store but a warehouse full of 1/6, 1/18, and 1/32 items. Row after row after row of shelves stacked to the ceiling. I haven't actually bought anything new in probably two years, just keep taking things out of storage which is like having something new. I worry about this dream sometimes.

Maybe you can make some money by letting people enter your dream and buy this stuff. Call it - Dream Ebay

I passed on a lot of deals too. I remember going on a trip to Comic-con 2006 in San Diego, stopping at a Walmart in Tucson and seeing a huge stack of Eagleston P-47's for $20 a piece.

Having multiples of one type plane was a symptom of Walmart's disrtribution problems. Hence you had to go to different Walmarts for different planes and armor.

There at the end I did scoop up a lot of good deals. I only wish I would have had more money to buy multiples, but I didn't get into collecting 21stC to turn a profit. I loved collecting them, though in hindsight it was probably foolish to miss the opportunity to make a butt load of cash. I can still do that but then I wouldn't have my planes and armor would I?

Some missed it altogether and are paying through the nose now. I'm quite happy I was a rabid collector, good hunter, and thankful I rode the wave when it came. I just didn't get greedy enough when it counted.

I too have had dreams of walking into the toy isle at Walmart and seeing stacks of 21stC, probably because I lived it, it's imprinted on my brain.

Here in Oregon they had those (1/18) '109's stacked at the ends of the aisles for months
and months for $20 (And then eventually $15) and I "thought" about buying
every one I could get my hands on at the time....."Thought" about it

I didn't like the paint scheme on them ( The re-paint idea never occurred
to me) though and just walked by them while I looked for some of the 1/32nd
Zero's I was hoping to find.

Now I see those same "tulip" nosed planes going for $100+ on EBAY and just
want to give myself the "V-8" slap to the head! lol
