Red Tails...

Post by f56tbird » Fri Jan 13, 2012 7:29 am

Gentlemen..,
With the up comming release of the new major motion picture film Red Tails.., this should increase the collectability of the P-51 Mustang "Bunnie" in just about any scale of the Tuskegee Airmen. Any one know what is a fair price for the 1/18 scale version of this plane..? and how many are planning to see the film opening this month. The trailers look excellent..!!
There was a demon that lived in the air. They said that whoever challanged him would die. He lived behind a barrier through which they said no man could ever pass. They called it..., the sound barrier..

Because Lucas is involved, I'll be reading reviews first at Rotten Tomatoes before I decide.

Glad I got my Bunnie back when, but the movie just looks to have just too much B.S. in it. I will eventually rent it and watch it but its definitely not on my must see list.

I totally agree. I was called a racist on Youtube just because I said the movie looked kinda corny.

Your gonna get that from people who try to make an issue out of it, unavoidable with the subject matter. Racism works both ways. I get it coming the other way sometimes living down here in "Nuevo" Mexico. Doesn't mean I can't evolve beyond it.

from an article at: http://www.azcentral.com/thingstodo/mov ... rview.html
Lucas is the first to admit that the one word that attracted him to this project wasn't "racism" but "dogfight."
"I love dogfights and I know how to do them," he says, running a hand through his leonine gray hair. "I told Anthony, 'You worry about the actors and the story on the ground, and I'll worry about the one hour we're in the air.'

I'll go see it in the theatre, which I don't do often because of ticket prices. I trust Lucas' ability to make a WWII warplane flick exiting to watch if Star Wars is any indicator, despite the wooden acting, at least he's not in charge of that aspect of the film.
The fact that he bucked Hollywood, financed it himself and loves airplanes like I do deserves my consideration, and simply because any film which has a lot of warplanes in it and is a successful box office hit means more WWII aviation flicks could be on the way now. There were a lot of pilots in WWII and heroic stories to be told. This movie puts them one step closer to being made.
I will support it. If it's a piece of crap, oh well, I've spent money on far worse I'm sure.

One can only hope It's bound to be good for our hobby too.

Are you guys kidding me??? I am SO there on opening night. Exactly how many WWII dogfight movies get made these days? LOL, You really think you can skip this one and wait for the next? (Hint: successful WWII movie = more WWII movies get made)

Yeah, that George Lucas is one terrible producer. If only a genius like Michael Bay was calling the shots instead.

Yeah man I get it alot down here in Florida too. People got a chip on their shoulder or whatever. Like the old Depeche Mode song says, people are people..

Back on topic, I'll catch it in a few months on pay per view. I agree, I would love for this to entice the studios into making some more war movies.

Epic Fail

Strange considering the last one went for $375 before being pulled, but then again that was a 7 day listing instead of a 3 day listing like this one. I was hopeful for this guy.

That's a good deal Cjg, you lowered it. I have all those planes, except for the "Bunnie" not a good time to be broke. :?

Looks like that other "Bunnie" went over $200 with 25 bids, but reserve not met. I don't know about these people and their reserves, They discourage bids for me, but whatever. He'll probably re-list. In a little over a week they're bound to fetch a better price.

I put a couple bids in on that one - to test the waters, so to speak. Not wild about the reserve and the price exceeded $200 without it being met. Really too much for a 1:18 plane, IMHO.

But I'm still kicking myself for not getting this one. They were even at a local TRU several years ago and I actually picked one up for a fellow board member, but not myself. At the time, I thought I had too may P-51s :P

At that price, might as well give it up.

yeah i passed on Bunnie too. Wish i hadn't but at the time i didn't feel like forking out yet more money on another P-51. There had been several released up to that point, many of which i didn't get, including Bunnie.

Oh well, i've got Ridge Runner. I can pretend with it....it's got red on it.

I think it was too. He is probably trying to get the highest price at his lowest point. Im thinking I should have waited and listed mine this weekend instead of now. After the movie then maybe someone would have put a bid on my collection.

Great article in the NYT about Lucas and making this film. After the director of "The Wire" made the movie initially for Lucas, it was too serious (and good), so Lucas brought in a cartoon creator to dumb it down and add sassy dialogue. While this obviously sux for us, it is the way to sell movies today whether we like it or not. Part of me wants to support the film because no major studio would make it and it is great subject matter. On the other hand, I know it will be cringe-worthy in many places.

Yeah he made it for teenage fanboys. I guess we have to endure some corny dialogue, as this is George Lucas' trademark with his Star Wars and Indy films here.

7 minutes of Redtails: http://theybf.com/2012/01/12/movie-fab- ... -tails-now

He said he's retiring from big budget films after one more Indy film.

Well he's a pioneer creating Industrial Light and Magic, which has enhanced many films including Pearl Harbor, Star Trek, etc...and that makes future films with warplanes on a grand scale possible. I hope this film if for that reason only does well. It should open up possibilities.

hm... cringe worthy indeed.

i suspect Lucas has tried to give it too broad an appeal and as such, it probably wont' appeal much to anyone. History buffs and aviation enthusiasts will not like it because it's too zippy and unrealistic.

And the gen pop. won't like it because it's not zippy enough.

I think it's destined to have mediocre success at the box office and most likely will not be as well regarded as Tuskeegee Airmen.

I don't know why it is that movie makers think they have to make planes look like they're moving as fast as jets. It was like that in Flyboys and now again in Red Tails.

The best war movies ever made and ever will be made are the ones that were done in the early 50's to late 70's, where they used real aircraft. Like Tora, Tora, Tora, Battle of Britain, 633 Squadron, Dambusters, Midway etc. They weren't perfect but a lot better.

Sigh.
