1/18 World War I models for Merit or BBI?

Post by dragon53 » Tue Oct 25, 2011 9:02 am

Since Merit and BBI appear to be resurrecting 1/18 model planes, I would hope they consider the untapped 1/18 World War I airplane market.
About two years ago, Admiral announced a 1/18 Sopwith Camel and a Fokker Triplane, but Admiral apparently is no longer in business.
Are there other collectors who would be interested in a 1/18 Camel, Fokker, SPAD, SE5A or Nieuport?

My favorite: William Barker's Sopwith Camel

Assuming the theory that Merit bought Admiral's SBD Dauntless prototype, maybe Merit can follow through on Admiral's intentions to release 1/18 World War I fighters, too. It sure would better than the alternative---Corgi's tiny 1/48 WW I fighters.

1/18 WWI fighters would be awesome! The closest alternative right now is Wingnut's 1/32 kits. Very cool kits! but labor intensive and .. well 1/32 scale...

Anything smaller to me is insane for a WWI fighter, common corgi! 1/48?

I think most WWII bombers are to small in 1/48

Could be worse. Corgi are primarily a 1/72 brand, although they do some nice diecast in 1/32.

And the Carousel WWI aircraft are also in 1/48.

WWI would be a big risk to do in 1/18. A much more niche market than WWII, and not sure if the numbers are there to support this line.

I too wouldn't go for WW1 Aircraft, but that applies to any scale, they just don't appeal to me, and there are just too many other later aircraft which I'd prefer to see issued/have in my collection.

I don't think all WW2 Bombers are too small in 1/48. Each of my Franklin Mint or Monogram B17s B24s and B29s take up at least the same shelf space as a 1/18 fighter does.

I like the size of my 1/32 Revell Ju88 and I too am looking forward to building the 1/32 He111 (Had the box in my hand on two seperate occasions ready to buy, only to find other stuff on sale which had to come first, forcing the shopkeep to prize the 111 out of my claw-like grasp.)

And there's still the 1/32 Flying Fortress to come , I put one on pre-order ages ago, but still no idea on the timescale.

Just my opinion.
All the best.
Sam
