Post by cjg476 » Sun Sep 18, 2011 7:32 pm

I recently purchased a 1:18 bf-109G seeman of Georg Amon and I was wondering if anyone knew a website where I could find more info on him. Im not really finding anything about him when you google his name. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if there's one specific website with information, but there are several with odd bits:

He mainly flew with 7/JG53 had a rank of Unteroffizier and claimed 9 victories;

18 April 43 - Spitfire, 16 August 43 - B24, 19 August 43 - B17,
22 August 43 - B26, 30 August 43 - P38, 2 September 43 - P38,
25 May 44 - B17, 24 August 44 - B17, 11 September 44 - B24,

I have found a few photographs of white 9, and one shows that it wasn't always - (if ever?) fitted with underwing cannon gondolas.

The personal markings on several 7/JG53 BF109 including the 'Seeman' (His nickname was 'sailor') marking on white 9 were painted by one of the mechanics at the start of their tour in Sicily when there was not much flying.

He was to be court-martialled for cowardice at the instruction of Galland, along with two other JG53 pilots following an incident 25 June 43 when Goering was furious that only two B17 were shot down out of a force of 120 attacking Naples, and demanded that pilots from each of the participating Jagdgruppe were put on trial.
If this court martial did actually happen, he was able to carry on flying and claiming victories and actually survived the war despite being shot down and captured wounded by U.S. forces 2 April 45

Hope this all helps, - but please note that other than the photographs which are available for all to see, i'm not claiming any of the above information as 100% actual fact, but it's what's out there...

Cheers
Sam

Thanks Sam...I also found some...I guess I thought it odd that 21st century made Amon's plane yet you can rarely find any info on him. As well as the fact that he survived the war and there is no post war info on him...It would have been nice to get his first hand account of the war.

Just found a bit more info to throw into the mix,
White 9 was lost off Malta with another pilot at the controls
and Amon was in a K-4 when he bailed out near Wurzburg 2nd April 45

Found nothing yet about what happened to him after his shoot down and capture, I'll have a look in the library and see if there's anything there.

Its like most other pilots you know everything about, but this one guy never gave interviews after the war?? No one know what happened to him? I also heard that he wasnt even flying his plane when it was shot down? Is there any truth to that? What about a biography? I dont know..all my 1:18 planes You can find out almost anything about the plane and they pilot accept this one...its like a great mystery I'm trying to solve..

Up to now, other than finding loads more about JG53 and the battles over the Med, I haven't found any more on GA other than what's already been posted here.
Haven't forgotten, but just no more info surfaced yet.

Cheers
