1/16 Compared to 1/18
1/16 Compared to 1/18
G'day from Oz.
I have a question about scale differences. I have a number of 1/16 Heng Long tanks but would like to have some artillery pieces, just for display, along side them.
21st Century and others seem to make a reasonable range of arty in 1/18 scale but I do not know if they are so different is size because of the scale difference that they will not look Ok.
Anybody done this?
Thanks
Mark.

Re: 1/16 Compared to 1/18
I use 1/18 to support my 1/16 vehicles whenever I can. Whether it's weapons sets, figures or unique support vehicles that isn't available in 1/16.
I think the big dilemma is setting like vehicles side-by-side in different scales is when the chaos begins.

Thanks Jeff.
Placed side by side how much difference is there between the same tanks?
Do you have a pic?
Thanks

The general rule is that the bigger the vehicle the bigger the difference, but... the smaller detail stuff is very interchangeable. Soldiers are very close.
See below. 1/18 is in the middle

Re: 1/16 Compared to 1/18
well hold on. There is a huge and very noticable difference between 1/18 figures and 1/16 figures. It's a greater difference than between 1/32 and 1/35 figures, which most consider unacceptable.
Jnew's picture is a bit misleading (not deliberately). The '1/18' figure is huge and overscaled. The head is 1/16 and the body is large and robust and more like 1/17. The 1/16 fig on the left side of the pic is well underscaled and the one to the right is about correct. Believe me, correct sized 1/18 figs are not intermixable with correct sized 1/16 figures. The size difference is 12.5%. In human terms that's the difference between a 6 foot tall man and a 6 foot 8 tall man, only worse because the head, hands and everything else are proportionatly larger too, which is often not the case with real humans. It's a very big diifference.
As you can see with the tanks, it's a 'father and son' type of size difference. That said, if you don't have the same vehicle in the other scale around and the 1/16 tank is a few feet away from another 1/18 vehicle, it's not at all obvious the 1/16 tank is overscale, unless you look for it.

Re: 1/16 Compared to 1/18
What AF is saying is true, it has been my experience though that 1/18 tankers look as good (and are allot cheaper and are pre-built/painted) as 1/16 tankers when placed in the vehicle, if you look at the picture of the three tankers I posted above notice like AF said the heads, arms and chests are all about the same size, its only the legs that are longer on the 1/16 figs. Which makes me wonder, did 21st Cen start out with the plan to do 1/16? and then decided on 1/18 and just shortened the legs on the molds??
Re: 1/16 Compared to 1/18
The stand also help them look slightly taller. The head of the 21st century is big for the body.I notice that12" 21st century figures have large heads too (compared to 12" DiD figures)
If half of the figures body is inside the turret, the size might not be notice. So i think the 1/18 may work for displaying on a turret of a tank, but not for posing out of the tank next to 1/16 figures.I have some indiana jones Germans and they are smaller than the 21st century Germans, they fit better on vehicles so i wonder: Which is a true 1/18 scale? the 3 3/4" indiana jones figures or the 4" ultimate soldier???

Re: 1/16 Compared to 1/18
Thanks for the input guys.
I think, in the end I will be able to get away with putting 1/18 scale arty in with my 1/16 tanks as there will be no other frame of reference and it will take a keen and expert eye to take me task over it.
