The next Russian Tracked Vehical will be the SU-85 !!!!!

Post by pickelhaube » Sun Feb 27, 2011 10:57 am

Well guys I have all intentions of doing a asault tank.

AFTER THE HORTEN -229 . or maybe after a few smaller projects.

I know the t-34 is not cheap and for you guys who are getting these there will be a small fortune if you get all of them.

But the next step should be the self propelled gun.

Mine would be the SU-122. It just looks Russian with that stubby nose.

It looks like the 85 is on top for now.

But I still think the 122 is cooler

But looking at the two, the 85 looks to be easier to build. :D :D :D

go su-85 go. I've loved that tank ever since i was a kid and built the bandai 1/48 model. The su-122 is very cool as well. You'll have to do that one too at some point.

well, once we get PH to do an IS-2 then the next step will be an ISU-152. Next year. ;) Probably should start off with the KV-1.

85 works for me though it would be cool to see the others including the 152 at some point. Agree with Aferg on the KV-1.

Yep! once that KV chassis is made.... the Germans will be on the run for sure!
My all time favorite WWII Russian Tank is the KV-2
Its a stupidly simple monster. One must have crew members on it or standing by it though to do that turret justice.

Image

It is said that when the first reports of the KV-2 got back to Berlin the German high command believed it was an elaborate hoax made to scare the Germans.

Well this is getting def off of subject but for what it is worth the KV-2 if my fav Russky tank as well.

But I will be thinking twice about doing another full build TRACKED vehical.

It is such a loooooooooooooooooooooooong process.

I would need my 10-12 guys to commit and I will be definatly be taking deposits.

But there is plenty of time probablya month or so for the assault gun and even more if I were to do another tracked vehical.

everyone likes the kv-2. It has a lot of character. But it is much ridiculed. And it shouldn't be. It was a very good vehicle, for what it was designed for. And that was to rumble up to enemy fortifications and blast them to bits, impervious to counter fire. It was not intended for rapid advances, or lightning warfare. The russians had the t-34 for that.

There is more than one story, from the early days of barbarossa, of a kv-1 or kv-2 holding up entire german divisions for days. One kv-2 held up an armiy's advance for a week. The germans could do nothing to put it out of action. Their tank guns were too small, as were their anti tank guns. All they had was the 88 but everytime they tried to set one up, the kv-2 took it out of action before it could fire a shot. So the army commanders called the luftwaffe for help, but the luftwaffe refused to deploy a sortie of stukas for one tank (CAS back then was not like it is today, where a zillion planes will descend on the enemy if ground troops call for it). So, finally the germans launched an all out offensive against the KV on its flank, with a hail of fire, meanwhile an 88 crew set up a gun on the other flank and was finally able to put the monster out of action. Took a week.

There are other stories like that from kv-1's and 2's. They were very good at what they were good at.

I will say this, Pickel has saved 1/18th in my mind. If the KV chassis and a few other like the MK III and PZ II (marder) and Kingtiger chassis could be built I would happily switch back to 1/18 from 1/16 for personal collecting. You produce excellent work, you are happy to communicate and build on demand and you are never out to rip people off with outrageous prices like other 1/18 kit builders, my hat is off to you my friend.

Yes, many incredible stories, when employed right it was a very big obstacle for the Germans. Much like the Jagdtiger was for advancing Americans in the final months of the war. I recall one being placed in a tunnel near a bridge, when the Shermans came on the bridge it would come out of the hole and blow them to bits and go back in the hole where it was safe from aircraft. After a week or so it stopped coming out of the hole, I think it ran out of gas or something. I feel bad for those Shermans ordered out onto that bridge day after day.

* It was designed to keep it from over-turning in the event of a nuclear explosion.

So with the tank not turned over, the crew fried inside like eggs and all the ammo exploded from the heat, all they need is... more ammo, new crew.....oh yea and a cleanup crew for the old crew
I always wondered why the reds didn't win the cold war, brilliant engineering!

I think I'm more anxious to see the Ho-229's first pics than football season to start again.

Not an armour guy, as I have said.

But I think the SU-85 is a great choice. Remember building one as a kid. :D

Thanks PH for doing these wonderful 1/18 customs, and keeping the hobby going in this scale. :D

It is hard to make choice between 85 and 122, I vote for the biggest gun SU-122 (more powerful).
