Small Scale Military Headquarters

Before 2011 is over I will make one of these in 1/18 scale. They will not have landing gear so they will be for hanging display only. They are both fairly simple and small, the Horton being an easier but larger. Very limited cockpit with pilot glued in and sealed, nothing opening.

Well I tell you I was going to do both as well. In time.

That is the time I never have.

I already have line drawings on both in 1/18 scale and I also have scale models to measure off of.

If or when I ever make mine i will do the Horten first.

That would look cool hanging from the ceiling. Kind of like a huge bat.

i say Horten. The 162 is more likely to be made in mass produced form some day.

A HO 229 would be cool to see in 1/18 scale.

In Natgeo's Hitlers Stealth Fighter, there is a sene in which the Horten brothers present Goering with a model of the
HO-229. It sure looked close to 1:18th.

Always been a huge fan of the Horten. One of these days I'll get to see her at the Garber facility.

Who can pass on the mystique of the original Flying Wing Horten ?

The closest we ever got was the one Hasbro was working on for Indiana Jones toys. Which was cancelled and wasn't even a Horten. It would have been out of scale and inaccurate (of course) but cool nonetheless.

My understanding, well from watching the History channel on "Secret Weapons of WWII" is that it was so far ahead of it's time is why.

The Northrop Flying Wing was said to be derived from it, and it's suggested that the Germans even came up with a form of stealth technology too. Smart buggers those Germans. You can see then why it was kept a secret.

I would say Horton as well. The technology gained from it over the years ultimately coincided with the B-2 if you think about it. People would likely identify with it more over the 162.

Looks like the Horton is winning, with the Horton you also could have the option of extending the canopy and adding antlers to make the NJ.

Horten for me as well. Just looks very futuristic, and is a real eye catcher.

I just bought a 1/72 Ho 229, that was done by Hworth. Very nice.

Yes, us Americans are very lucky that we had smart programs in place like paperclip to exploit this stuff or it could have been lost or worse ended up with the Russians, it got us to the moon, but it also got them the AK-47 & the Mig 15, it was in those early hours that that the cold war was already starting.

I would rather see the Pickle make the Ho 229.

Well I tell you. I have always wanted build the Ho-229 .

I think that I had a post way back when on it.

The Ho-229 and Northope Flyingwing have always been my Dad's favorite aircraft and for that alone makes me want to build it. In his honor

It would be totally cool to build and have.

So if you do not build it and if there is REAL interest in it . I will build it.

But this will be a big build, big plane and probably a big price tag.

Unless we go with the way it was found after the war with no wings. Just the center section.

I saw the real thing up in Maryland when they called the restoration/ museum the Silver Hill Meusem.

I have pics somewere of the HO-229 and other behind the seen pics.

My dad was good buddies with the curator at the time.

Great to hear PH.

But a big part of the problem with this is everyone gets excited, and full of false promises. And when it comes time to "put your wallet where your mouth was", interest fades.

For a 1/18 Horten, I would be willing to spend $300, but it would have to be a good model, and painted as well. And I just don't know if it could be done at that price. Probably not.

And to be totally honest, I am not going to spend $500+ to get one in 1/18. Although a few members here might, but I think that PH would want some kind of non refundable deposit to ensure he is not wasting his time.

Not trying to be pessimistic, just realistic.

In the meantime, I am very happy with my 1/72 Ho229, done by Harry.

This Horten 229 seems like a good candidate for 3-D printing to make the prototype. Center section and left & right wings. If you keep the detail to that of the Pegasus V-1 it could help keep costs down. As far as landing gear goes (if any) fixed position / removable......not retractable. This too would save time and cost, I'd go for that!

Pickel, if you make it and it comes in at or below the price of the T-34 I'll buy one! You know I will. And what about a ME-163 Komet?! I keep hearing someone is going to produce one but I don't seeeee one. Maybe its coming out with the King Tiger and Jagdpanther.

You and Normandy are right.

I am thinking that this ( if I do it ) will probably be in the $300 range. I could probably get it done cheaper than that . It depends on how the build goes.

The Ho-229 will have a wingspan of 36.6 inches and the mid section will be 16.35 inches.

In comparison

The P-38 has a 34.66 wingspan with 25.22 in legnth.

The 229 is not a very complicated build . Yeah right

If people can take that price tag then of course I will build it .

AGAIN IF I CAN GET 10 PEOPLE TO COMMIT I WILL BUILD THE H0-229.

This is a serious project for me. I would love to build it.

Almost ALL of the projects I have built have been the wants of other people and the popularity of it. If I build the 229 it would be the only project that I really really wanted myself .

I have thought long and hard about building the 229 and how I would tackle it.

1. Landidng gear

The front tire is crazy over sized. Unless I do a tire from scratch I would probably use a r/c tire of the same size. The main gear was used from a Me-109 so no problem there.

2. Main wing section.

I already have a Admiral Me-262 slated to be cannalbalized for the engines. The main center section will be a standard r/c build. But out of plastic.
I would probably steal the cockpit area as well from the Ady 262 modifid to suit.
The canopy would be made out of vacumed plastic.

3. Wings

The wings I am unsure of how to do. But I have a couple of ideas.

A. I would build the wing up like a standard r/c wing and wrap it in sheet styrene. I would make a spar out of spruce , brass or styrene to give it rigidity.
Then I would make a mould of the whole wing with the spare sticking out and maybe a couple of ribs on it. Then pour the mould with resin and tumble the mould coating the inside with resin . I would have a big Ho-229 popsicle. I would do this for both sides.

B. I could build up the wing with outer skins top and bottom with a wing rib pattern reinforced with a spare. The part would be 3 big pieces.

I kind of like the popsicle idea.

So there are 20 votes or so for the Ho-229 how many of you are willing to pay $300 for the Ho-229 ?

I was hoping you would Pickle, you know that! I love that you are already working it out in your mind. I only hang my 1/18 stuff as do allot of people, so maybe think of landing gear being detachable? an add-on if wanted? just an idea. Snake had a good point, most will want to buy it completed (assembled, painted, detailed) Was your $300 price tag for that or the kit? You know I have no problem paying that for the kit. Count me in.
