1/18 UH-1 "HogHead II"?

Post by dragon53 » Thu May 20, 2010 9:31 am

What helicopter unit did the 21st Century/JSI UH-1C "Hoghead II" belong to in Vietnam?

Also, did the 21st version come with pilot figures as standard?

BLACK_DRAGON_ONE:

Thanks for the info.
It's going to be some waiting period for JSI's UH-1....and I bet it won't include a pilot figure.

this post left me wondering about a pilot figure for my chopper. It was one of the first 21c items I bought and I threw away the box :(

I didn't remember seeing a pilot, but there he was still tie wrapped in his seat with what looks like a molded on helmit.

maybe I take'll some pics.

SUPERSONICFIFI:

I'd rather have the JSI/21st Century "Hogshead II" version with the nose-mounted grenade launcher.

I'm curious as to how much the "Hogshead II" will cost

The Hogshead II are all over Ebay periodically. It is the most common 1:18 Huey to purchase. They are $80-$150 depending on the day.

Here was mine, I recently sold it to a fellow member on this board named sax5thave via Ebay. I miss it though;

TKJAER21:

Do you know what unit the "Hogshead II" belonged to in Vietnam?

Also, I've seen them on ebay going for big bucks. I'm hoping the JSI version will be cheaper than the 21st Century versions on ebay.

Yes. This helicopter has a few other productions in the modeling business by Revell and MRC. It is known as the UH-1C Frog. 21C forgot to add the A Troop decals/tempo to it and the Dolphin insignia as well and the word Lead on the front. They also messed up the Bu No/Serial/Tail code that should read 66-16589 or just 6589 and instead made it 6585.

It is part of U.S. Army 174th Assault Helicopter Company known as the "Dolphins".

Here is what it should look like:

Here is more info:

02/14/69: Total flight hours at this point: 00000712. Aircraft
and Crew were assigned a mission in Chu Lai, to sling load
an OH-23 from the 335th Trans Co to “Redbeach” in Da
Nang. At approximately 1430 hours, the aircraft (with the
OH-23 slung underneath) departed and headed north along
the coast. At approximately 1440 hours a loud snap and
grinding sound was heard from the engine compartment. The
Pilot (O’ Sullivan) turned the aircraft west toward the shore.
At this time, all abillity for the aircraft to climb or remain
straight and level was lost. The Pilot surveyed the situation
and decided he could make a normal approach with power.
While descending from 1500 feet, the C/E pulled the
inspection panel on the left side of the transmission island to
see if he could locate the problem. Negative results were
found. While continuing the approach, the A/C (Clark) noted
all instruments were in the green. At approx. 200 feet, the
Pilot released the OH-23. The instruments again indicated all
systems in the green. At approximately 50 feet a small flare
and pitch pull were performed with negative results. At
approx. 6 feet, the Pilot initiated a greater flare and full pitch
pull with negative results. The aircraft hit tail first severing
the tailboom (grid coordinates BT225375). Aircraft was a
total loss.

I already have a Hobby Master 1/72 UH-1 "Heavyhog", but it's too small. I looked some of the Corgi 1/48 UH-1 gunships, but 1/48 is small, too. None have pilot figures.
The JSI UH-1C appears to be the best one---if it's ever released, but I wonder about the price of the JSI UH-1 and I bet it won't come with pilot figures, either.

SCBVIDEOBOY:

Thanks for the photos. That's a cool-looking Huey pilot. There was one on ebay for $45, but it's now a mere $35.
I sure hope JSI includes pilots with its "Hoghead II".....but I'm still waiting for pilots for the JSI F-14.

It's in perfectly good hands and in the company of so many 1/18 planes and choppers. He is happy with his new home.

I am also happy with the German lot you sold on ebay. Too bad I missed the Allied lot. Ended up spending $500 on ebay to buy them piece by piece.

I am sure that sax5thave is an honorable person, but he offered to buy one of my Hogs.
I cannot sell it to him because of the six-month rule.

$300 shipped through Ebay. It was by coincidence I met the seller in this forum. The lot consisted of:

Huey with 2 pilots
3 M151 jeeps
M48 tank
Another tank I forgot
over 20 figures
weapons and other stuff.

I maybe new to this forum but definitely not in the hobby. I've got over 700+ feedback. Half of which I sell from real pilot helmets to 1/6 scale action figures. I reside in the Philippines with my family and do a lot of buying here in the US.

As for the 6 month rule. Well I'm kinda guilty about that. So yeah my bad. It's just frustrating ( modesty aside ) to bring all these money to spend yet can't buy anything from ya good people. I apologize for that. Won't do that again.
