You are not alone on this one. I love my 1/18 AC, but I am not able to spend that kind of scratch for one plane.
I know the time of a 39.99 plane are gone... but I can't afford a 230.00 plane.
Kudos to those of you that can.

I really want one, but I keep going back and forth on getting one. I can live with the spots, but the fragile landing gear really concerns me. How will this hold up over time?

I'm with you. Now that we are finally being charged the "correct" amount for 1/18 scale planes I am pretty out of the game. $80 plus for the average WWII release makes this hobby unattainable for me. I just can't justify the new prices. I want the F-14, but at $230 plus shipping, it is just not in the cards at the moment.

I have a couple of BBI 1/18 planes that I bought for under $50, but that's about it.
I primarily stick to 1/32 & 1/48 due to size & budget.

Although I wouldn't mind having one, the price tag on this bird is just to much for my pocketbook. If they ever get reduced by some $50 or so I would surely consider getting one then.

I didn't buy one... I don't buy much modern stuff, and sold some of what I did have off a while back. The jets are neat for sure, but I'm a WW2 guy and even then I don't really ever have an inkling for planes much.

I got one, fixed the spots, and I'm darn proud of it :P

The $228 I paid for mine from a local hobby store was most certainly steep... Not Badcat steep, but steep nonetheless. However, not long after the plane was first announced earlier this year, I began saving for it, tucking a little money aside each month, with the goal to have about $250 in the F-14 fund by the initial October release date. The fact that the plane came two months after that helped. I also tried to limit my purchases in other areas - which was extremely difficult given all the new Star Wars, GI Joe, and PTE items as of late. (It is surprising how much $7 action figures and $20 vehicles can add up!) Finally, I also parted with some of my collection by selling items on the board and on ebay to make a little extra cash.

I do not make much money and am not rich by any stretch of the word, but with a little foresight, I was able to get and enjoy my F-14

F-14

Post by Coreyeagle48 » Wed Dec 30, 2009 12:17 am

Greetings:

I echo what tmanthegreat said.

The F-14 was expensive, which is why I am being super careful handling it, putting it together, etc. But at the same time, with 1/18 being dry for so long, I knew I wanted one as part of my collection. I preordered for $250 (including shipping) and realized that was a big time purchase. However I also cut my purchases in other areas, sold some old stuff lying around here on ebay, and used some of the money I get from my spoiling grandparents for my birthday to cover the rest. It worked out just fine.

The F-14 is an incredible piece and I am glad to have her in my collection. The spots really do not bother me and in person do not look as bad as in the photographs. I have recieved several compliments about the plane from visiting relatives even with the spots. I may fix the spots using the makeup method come spring (I don't have a place to really set it up and paint it in winter), but for now it's being left go. It may just be entirely left go as well.

Incredible 1/18 piece of engineering, well worth it to me!

Corey

I'll be completely honest and say I am pretty much out of the 1:18 game. I am keeping one of just about everything and already liquidated the majority of my boxed stock. The attraction to 1:18 was based on two factors: realism and price. Once the price point went up to what I consider a high level, then the interest just fell off the shelf. Plus, I have a small house, so to jam it up with even more planes makes the decision to stop collecting them all the easier. The investment part of me knows that when you get over a certain price point, your return will most likely diminish. The neat thing about the $39 plane is the fact that collecting them was not extremely elitist, and thus a widespread interest in the hobby right now. Now that the planes broke $200, they are getting elitist and interest will continue to drop off, unfortunately.

Anyways, much of the fun in collecting these things was the hunt. I'm sure most of you will agree that the first sight of the latest plane after a diligent search at Walmart really made your day!! It did mine.

So, I continue to really enjoy my planes, tanks, figures and buildings, but I know that unless some really cool WWII plane pops up at a decent price, my days of collecting 1:18 are over.

Oh, I'll still be on the boards, though, so don't think I will be disappearing any time soon.

Living in old Tomcat territory (Grumman's former home on Long Island) I had to pick one F-14 up. Not thrilled with the spots but I can deal with it for now. I may keep mine sealed until they announce a second series to decide if I want another to open or not. Either way I have no regrets picking up this bird and will eventually display it in pride with My other Long Island Birds (and I do need an A-10 if anyone is listening). :D

I didn't get one either. Too much money and not that interested. The F-16 is my favorite jet and I found one at Target last year for under $40. I would buy a F-18 if they rerelease one for about $100. If someone ever does a F4 or a F100, I hope they keep the price reasonable.
