Thats awesome. Too bad its a kit, but I wonder if Pegasus will eventually release a painted version. I may just get the kit, though, as the paintjob will be easy enough

From what I read during postings at Comic Con there will be a pre-built version made. i'm going to get one of the kits just as a cost saving measure for now.

I ordered one. I need a good modeling project to keep me distracted from work

Depending on how detailed the kit is, the hardest parts to paint will be the instrument panel, other cockpit details, and the framing on the canopy. The rest of the plane is international orange in color with black wheels, aluminum struts, and a black or gunmetal colored rocket engine nozzles. I build a 1:72 scale Tamiya XD kit years ago which came out fantastic. I may look into tracking down a 21c pilot figure to stick in the cockpit, assuming one will fit.

Who makes this - and who will be making the pre-built version? Will the kit have an opening canopy or any other moving surfaces? Any other details on this?

Wow....talk about the 1/18 scale hobby waking up a bit at the end of the year. Just put my order in for the kit.

It's great to see the 1/18 scale X-1 come to life even if it is in kit form at the moment. Hope we get to see more 1/18 scale work from Pegasus down the road.

What color orange was the X-1? What paint would be accurate to paint the exterior of this aircraft?

A few years ago, I built a 1:72 scale Tamiya kit of the Bell X-1. I used Testors acrylic gloss International Orange. The color worked perfectly in terms being an orange color that was not too flourescent and that was flat enough without loosing its gloss. You will want to stay away from anything neon.

Great news on the X-1. I wish Pegasus would make an Me-163 Komet in 1:18th with the same amount of detail as the V-1 kit and at the same price.

I got my X1 kit today! It will be a couple weeks before I start to build it, but the kit seems pretty easy. For me, the most challenging part of the construction will be painting the canopy framing and the decaling.

The parts are very robust, so when this thing is assembled, it will be sturdy. There is a full cockpit interior, though it will not be 21c or BBI type detail. The instruments, for example, are decals. The entry hatch is moulded in place, but the canopy seems as though it can be attached and removed easily. Best part of the model is that the landing gear seem to be retractable! The doors are designed to open based on the robust and oversized hinges, so the landing gear will likely retract or at least be like the BBI 1:32 F-4, where they can be removed or inserted so you can display them up or down. The directions were not very clear on that part, so I am only guessing.

This will be a fun project, nevertheless

I ordered mine from Badcat. They are located only about 100-150 miles to the north of my location in Fresno. Shipping from them, whether through USPS or UPS, usually takes no more than a couple days. That is partly why I've ordered a lot from them over the years
