I used an oil wash and I think yours looks a lot better. I did use some black pastels also.

Great job, Wolfman :D

On a related note, I've been quite pleased to see all the various F-14 spot repairs that have been made. There has been an above-average number of repaints on this plane (I wonder why  ) and the projects are all coming out successfully with overall minimal effort.

While the regular F-14 thread has been an example of this board behaving at its worst, conversely, this F-14 Spot Repair thread has been one of the better threads I've seen on this board in a long time. In the true spirit of this hobby, members have come together with civil discussion and have presented a number of ideas, which then can be referenced and used by other members. Very cool 8)

There are clear decal sheets to print your own.

Send a PM to boardmember Jackson. He is the owner/creator of Vexillarius Decals and can do custom orders upon request. He will likely need the measurements and pictures of the markings for reference. His work is top notch and, having used his decals many times, I will personally vouch for their quality.

Ok all, I just got home with two new bottles of Model Master Flat Gull Grey ACRYLIC. This beats the enamel HANDS DOWN when applying with the sponge make-up pads:

1. It is much thinner
2. It dries with an egg shell finish that matches the factory finish

3. It cleans up with water
4. You can even rinse and reuse the pads.

Glad I waited to do the whole bird

I'll post some final pics in a few days.

Please e-mail me or call if you have any questions

Happy Dabbing!!!

I mean Happy New Year!!!!!

How many bottles?

Post by deankleines » Thu Dec 31, 2009 2:12 pm

I am estimating two at the most. These are .5 oz bottles.

$5 and a sponge make up pad!!! Go figure!!!

The said Testors Acryl Flat Gull Gray paint is the best for repainting the F-14. I was amazed by how well it worked myself

I used about one and a half bottles with my own project, thinning the paint 50/50 with water and airbrushing it on. I would expect more paint to be needed with the sponge method than with an airbrush.

I hv an unassembled Estes AIM-54A Phoenix.. It's about 1/5 scale, 30 inches long but comes with decals. I can scan the decals then scale them down further to 1/18. Then maybe Vexillarius Decals can print us some scale decals. Or maybe let Vex scale them down, whatever his preference. Anyone interested? My scanner is in storage so I'd hv to get it out this wkend to do this.

Is this the right paint to buy when applying with the sponge make-up pads?

That is the correct paint if you wish to use the enamel.

I would however, try to get a bottle of the Model Master Acrylic Flat Gull Grey - It has a product number 4763.

It also is a direct match, dries to a satin finish very close to factory and washes up with water.

Either way, you get a very excellent, easy to use method for making the spots disappear.

Best regards,

Dean Kleines

This is results of today's test for me...
This is 50% each of acry flat gull gray and light ghost gray with a little water mixed in and airbrushed over the elevator.
I left the spots very subtle showing through and other shadings.
As others have said, this is probably what they were after originally.
I will clear dull coat mostly over the markings when I am done.
I'm happy with the results and will shoot the rest of the aircraft tomorrow. FINALLY! Spots will BE GONE! :P
Or at least put in the proper place. LOL

well my spot cat is spotless now, i use some of my old tactics, paint very thin coats and using marvel mystery oil to remove paint on the decals, it worked pretty good, i still got a little more work to do then i post pics.

I decided after I cleaned the spots off my Tomcat, that it might be practical to do an entire repaint. I'll either do a TomCat Aggressor scheme or another earlier Tomcat with the white bottom. I'll base my decision on how easy or expensive it it to get new decals for it.
