FW-190

Any low-down on the differences among the various Fw-190 versions? Anything to avoid or especially valuable?

Early versions of the FW-190 such as Red 3 had very weak landing gear (which I discovered right away when I snapped one off immediately after opening the box), requiring a redesign, that came with later schemes. Which ones were modified I don't remember now. The rarest of the lot is the European release "14", I forgot which color it is. The rarest US version of the FW-190s I believe is Blue 12, which is the prettiest of the series, IMHO.

Hope this helps!

Same here. I had a thread on the repair a long time ago. I simply melted a metal pin in place of the broken one, split the wings and re-installed the gear.

i have had no problem with the landing gear on mine...but i tend to leave them in one position and not open and close repeatedly.

Quality control was variable on these. I have some gaps and glue smears on my 3.

However, i like them all very much.
i never met an airplane i didn't like...

Thanks for the info. I see what LOOKS LIKE a "Red 3" on eBay -- but it's in a "Motorworks" package -- I assume that's another brand 21c marketed under -- is that right?

I also had problems with the landing gear. I could not get the wings apart so I removed the landing gear and drilled a hole through the piece where the tabs are broken and than slid and glued a new piece in. Much better and stronger. I do not know about newer versions. I have the Red 3, Michaelski and the Black 1. All of these are the same. The 190D came in the motorworks boxes and also the 21st boxes. Motorworks was the Walmart releases I believe

Exactly, Motorworks is a Walmart namebrand that 21st used for their products through that chain.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Red 3 and Michaelski came without the armored canopy shroud.

Also, the first of the first Red 3 FW-109s did not have the loop antenna mounted on the bottom of the aircraft. Instead, the part was still afixed to the control stick, which it was adjoined to during the injection moulding process.

My Michaelski FW-190 (an early example from Wal Mart in the Motorworks box) came with the armored canopy shroud, but I recall the Red 3 plane I first had - and then later sold - did not. My Black 1 and Black/Blue 12 planes have the shroud.

I even recall the later Michaelski planes in the regular 21c boxes having smaller stenciling labels than the first run.

Funny all the little changes that occurred with the FW-190

My Blue 12 had the antenna on the stick.

Was 12 S.3 or 4?

I just checked my Red 3 and sure enough the antenna is on the control stick. I remember tearing the box apart and looking all over the floor thinking it fell off when I opened it. :D

What's funny is that we figured this out when the plane first came out, hehehehe...... Time flies, hey?

I never realized that some came without the shroud until this thread. I had to look at my red 3 and blue 12 to confirm the difference. Does anyone know if this historically correct?
I knew about the antenna, on the control stick and chose to leave mine there on my red 3.

No it's not. 21st missed it on the first go-around.

The tail wheel also retracts/extends. I'm sure most you know about that already, but back in the day when these were first out, it took me a while to figure it out :P

I just posted a custom painted Dora in the customs archive. It's Barkhorn's mount.
For those curious...
