1:18 A-10?

Post by bravo5 » Sun Oct 24, 2004 9:13 am

First off, thanks to P51 for keeping the 1:18 forum going. Back to topic, I was looking at the Hobbytown USA webpage and the home page has what appears to be a 1:18 Warthog on the front. It looks similar to the prototype 21st century showed a few years back. Anyone heard of this or is it old news? BTW, here's the link: http://www.hobbytown.com/dailyhomepage/?id=73

A-10

Looked in the Hobbytown search and they have 4 A-10's but all in 1/48,1/144,1/174 scale. The picture in the ad sure looks bigger. Bob

A-10

There is a kit out there for an A10 that is just slightly larger than 1:18. I have to say I have been tempted to buy it as a display piece. It is under 100 bucks unpainted and is pretty sweet.

The real A10 in 1:18 scale would be 35.55555....inches long
and the wing span would be 38.333333......

Compare that to this model which is 34.3 inches long, and has a 38.1 inch wingspan and you realize it's pretty darn close to 1:18.

the u/c leaves a lot to be desired

But otherwise it's not bad The size difference is negligable and it has a clear canopy....would make a pretty nice in flight display piece for sure.

Now....how to find ordinance for it

It's very tempting but i have a strong hunch we will see one either by 21c or BBI.

If not it's nice to know this one is around..

There's also a BAe Hawk available....i didnt do the math on it but i would hunch that it's close to 1/18. I would feel pretty confident in saying we won't see that in 1/18 any time soon....

Some may remember that 21st Century demo'ed a model of a 1:18 scale A-10 at Toy Fair a few years ago. To date, however, they've chosen not to produce it I guess out of concern that it's huge and since it's not such a "sleek, cool looking" aircraft as some of their other products that it might not sell well? Hopefully they'll go ahead and do it one day.

yea i remember that, 21st was talking about an A10 and were showing images of early molds, and as big as planes have been you think they would have released this before the M113,

but then i think packaging might have been a problem, isnt that the reason someone was saying that they havent made a phantom yet, becuase the plane wouldnt fit inthe current shipping box they use, i think a A10 would have that problem.

I have a picture of the XD prototype A-10 in the Miscellanious Folder on my webshots account. You can see how they were attempting to hide the Proto Cobra........

An A-10 would be great maybe 21st won't be as reluctant to produce it now that jets seem to be so popular. I figure if they are going to produce an F-4 they are going to make a bigger box design that can hold all these larger planes. Wasn't it stated that there might be a line of "Bigger" aircraft produced? I think I remember this on GP's board a long time ago. There was talk of a 1/32 B-25.

21st Please make the A-10!!!!!! If not the how about BBi!!!! Just incase they are listening. They could do at least 2-3 repaints and I would buy all three. Bring on the jets! Maybe even a Harrier eventually.

someone a while back was throwing around a pic of Trumpeters 1/32 A-10 claiming it was a prototype for 21st's A-10, but according to Roy Sutherland (gentleman responsible for working up many of the WW2 protos for 21st) he didn't hold much faith in the A-10 ever becoming a reality beyond the clay mockup they had originally done. As to whether this is the case, remains to be seen as he said this over 6 months ago. I wouldn't be suprised to see Bbi do a Warthog if in fact 21st scrapped theirs!

You are exactly correct about this. A 1:18 scale A10 will require a different packaging style, something similar to or larger than the P-38 packaging I'm guessing. Just another issue 21st has to deal with in considering this product for release.

Odd thing here is: how is BBI going to know if 21st actually "scraps theirs". It's not like they are going to come out and say "we'll never make one of these." Companies are generally not willing to burn bridges like that. Somebody is just going to have the make the damn thing and take the risk that the #1 competitor doesn't already have it rolling off the production line!

I'm assuming that neither of these companies has spies in the other's organization. :)

and with 21st suprising us with all these releases we werent expecting recently, its quite possible someone will indeed spot an A-10 on the shelf at WM!?!? but I must say, Roy seemed pretty convincing when asked specifically about the A-10..not like when Rex would give us the "you'll have to wait and see" line back in the day..lol

The only solution to this problem that I can see would be for one of us to go work for 21st Century Toys and be a spy!
