With the exception of the cranks, which I'm not certain about, I believe the 21C XD 88mm has all those features (see review at the beginning of the thread), plus I think it has a few other features that the FOV doesn't, like the pivoting caisson wheels and the locating pins on the ground pads, and possibly more. Maybe TKO could enlighten us some more in this regard.FOV 1:32 88 is in some respects still the winner in terms of detail. Despite its small size, it has the recoil, folding parts, working clamp and best of all, the cranks on that gun actually work to traverse and elevate the barrel

the 88 also comes with 2 crates with 6 massive shells. These shells fit nicely into the breech of the gun. The towing arm can be fixed in a down or up position with a locking pin that is removable. Each of the foot pads on the 4 arms can be lowered. That and my previous review about covers it. Frankly one of the best things is all of the seperate molded parts that are then glued on to create layers of detail. It's a very complicated looking piece. Also read the instructions on this one. I almost couldn't figure out how to lock the carriages in place so that they would support themselves when placed on a solid surface. You guys will see what I mean.

Thanks TKO. What I'm still not clear on is whether or not the hand cranks on the 21C XD 88mm gun are functional for elevation and rotation (traverse)...?? but even if they aren't, this would be the only feature that FOV's 32X version could claim to have an edge on. Based on what we've seen so far, I would have to say the 21st XD model appears to be superior in every respect. BTW, any speculation on what the S2 scheme might be... gray, or camo..??

sorry... You are correct that the hand cranks do not operate the gun. They turn but they do not move it up down right left. S2 was believed to be the german field grey color. At the time Roy had left there were no solid efforts made yet to commit s2 into production. I don't think we will see s2 anytime soon. It's the exact reason for me painting one myself.
There's an entire DAK series clogging pegs in lots of places to crew it with.
One even comes with a EM 1M R36 range-finder.
I was gonna get it for use with some of my old Joe figures, but i just can't justify it now.

I suppose the DAK artillery crewman (the name escapes me at the moment... Erdman maybe..??) would be a must have, then add any (or all) of the remaining DAK figures to round out your gun crew. While we're speaking of figures to go with the 88, are there any suggestions for me to look for?

Captain Wild Bill Kelso: My what?

Here are more pics. This time I used a 1:18 soldier to help visualize scale. This is also the progress that I have made thus far on my own version of a grey paint scheme. As you can see I have 1 more carriage to go still, then I will do a final airbrush effect to help pop the details and also provide a little weathering. Those wheel carriages take some patience and care to mask off and paint.

Now that is the way the 88 should look I'm going to live happily with the current DAK version, but 21c should really have made their S1 version in something like TKO's excellent custom. After all, that is what they did with the 32x version...tko211 wrote:

Got mine in from Foxhole yesterday, a big thank you to Matt and the guys at FHT, super fast shipping and superior customer service all the way. Initial impressions on the piece... a very nice model with enough detail and functionality to satisfy the most demanding modeler or collector, and a must have for XD collectors. First order of business for me will be a re-paint, as DAK is not a collecting or modeling interest of mine. I was thinking along the lines of an Eastern Front Olive Grun camo pattern over the existing tan base color, removal of the DAK insignia and the addition of suitable replacements, and some beefed up weathering.

So I get my "88" and I just looked at it for two days while I played with a new camera (got both the same day)...... So today, I unpack (how in the heck do those tiny fingers tape the inside of the box to the box sides? I've long ago given up on how they wrap the plastic string ties to those tiny parts.
So, I'm balancing the gun and box bottom upside down between my legs while I cut the wire ties on the bottom. It occurs to me that I'd be in trouble if maybe this is the first time that 21C doesn't use a couple of screws holding the vehicle to the black plastic bottom. AS the thought arrives in my peanut brain, bang...... I'm holding the box bottom and the "88" is on the floor........ cardiac arrest time...... I sat awhile and slowly pick the gun up. The only damage was a snapped axle. A relatively simple glue.
So............. watch out opening up your "88"". Don't pull a "TTT".
And BTW, the gun is a masterpiece, great work 21C, and somebody please think about making a big half-track to pull it........ we need one...
