Official Thread - F-104 Starfighter

Post by vulgarvulture » Fri Mar 04, 2005 11:52 am

In another thread unrelated to the F-104, there was a question about the delivery date of the F-104. BCA now states that it is June. Good.

Maybe June for them but this spring for Walmart. It's happened before :D
I wouldn't preorder this one from anywhere....who knows where it will show up first.

Any idea if the 104's or the Avengers will have the same retail price as the other smaller planes?

I can see them being priced like the P-38 ($60) at the small retailers but.....[drumroll] .....they said at Toy Fair the WM planes would be the same price   $40 for either the 104 or the Avenger will take the term "bang for your buck" to a whole new level :)

June is good news, but the plane may very well be like the ME-109G, the Panzer IV, WC-63, and Winter Panther - all of which haven't shown up at Wal Mart yet.

I don't think I'll preorder it either, as probably by the time it comes out in June, I'll be back at home and can get one at Hobbytown w/o paying a shipping quote and w/o searching high and low over four different Wal Marts!

Well, at least 21st put it straight on their website!! Late April-early May for the 104 and Late May-early June for the Avenger. They will be here sooner than expected! Keeping my fingers crossed.....

Hey - I was just going to post that, but you beat me to it, Teamski! I guess we should take the 21c announcement as the most reliable. Lets hope there are no factory fires or sinking feighters to hinder the distribution. Certainly can't wait and I'm glad we're hearing May-June for the Avenger and not December!

With the F-104 coming out soon, I went ahead and made this the 'official' F-104 starfighter thread. And to start off... some photos of a larger scale F-104 (1:1 scale :-P) at the Planes of Fame Museum that I took earlier today (4-16-05)

Cool photos! That F-104 looks rather intact, and should be a little easier to restore. I have got to get out to the Planes of Fame museum one day!

BTW - You know, the Area21 anouncement from over a month ago about the F-104 and Avenger being "on time" also states that the given dates are subject to change due to refinement setbacks, etc. so what was said then may not necessairly hold true now... though I am hoping the March 4th announcement still holds true! [I say this in light of the news to the contrary that we have recieved from BCA in the other Avenger thread.]

very good pics of the 104 !
And it's a former Belgian Air Force one.
I'm remember them when I was a kid. My dad was in the Air Force and I had many opportunities to see many 104.

If you are interested, decals are aviable for those who want to build one in 1/32. I have one and decals was of a great quality.
Maybe he will do some for 1/18 scale one.

Area 21 has pictures of the paint scheme for the S2 version of the 104. It looks nice.

Hmm, save for the markings it looks a lot like the one in p51's photos...

S2 sheme is what I call Vietnam sheme.
About P51 pics, sheme is very different. It's typical of Belgian Air Force.

Take care.

Yes, that S2 F-104 looks really nice. It is an interesting paint scheme. I am so used to seeing F-104s depicted in their silver paint scheme or the NATO camoflauge of the West German Luftwaffe. Though I'm still debating on getting the F-104 (for display space reasons, not quality or price) such a striking, although not gaudy paintscheme makes that aircraft look all the more appealing!

S2 scheme

Post by wise690 » Tue Apr 19, 2005 4:30 pm

I like the s2 Vietnam scheme more than the s1 scheme. Hopefully it will follow close behind the s1.

I didn't realize the starfighter actually saw combat in vietnam.....but it did see some limited duty, interesting.

Ski, the S1 F-104 in your profile album appears to have silver (natural metal) wings but i believe that 21c's version has the wings in white, does it not? I've never seen white wings on a starfighter before but knowing Roy i'm sure 21c's version is correct...

What kinds of missions did the F-104 fly in Vietnam?

If you go here you will see both versions of the 104. You will see the S1 has white wings

They were sent to escort F-105s on wild weasel missions. Several 104's were lost to Migs and SAMS. No 104 shot down an enemy aircraft over VN. Pretty sad.......

Believe it or not, 104s were used on some ground attack missions. Needless to say, not too well!!
