My first XD

Post by tosborne3 » Fri Jan 04, 2008 7:39 pm

Hey guys, I was just sitting around being bored when I thought of an idea. Do you all remember the first thing you got in XD? For me it was this lone German soldier from TRU. I told myself " yeah, I'll just buy a couple of these guys to have as cool colectibles." And now its hundreds of figures and vehicles. I was just wondering if any of you remember your first XD. After that fig it was two to five new figs every two weeks or so, but I really can't remember what I got after that.

I named him Kurt Von Wulf. :D

Cool thread Tom. My first XD was actually a beat to hell M48 that I picked up on ebay cheap to go with a couple of Soldier Force (Chap Mei) guys I grabbed from a pharmacy on a whim because they reminded me of my childhood Joe collection. When the M48 came, I realized it was WAY too detailed and stuck out like a sore thumb. It took a little while (and a better job) but I eventually realized I would rather be collecting the good stuff. 8)

The original Huey helicopter.
I wanted to get the VN figs to go with it, but the WWII US and Germans were on sale for 2.98 each! So, when I got home, I set up my Huey with it's pilot defending his aircraft from hostile Germans!

Motorworks winter ME-109E on clearance for $25. I felt like a fool for spending such a large amount of money on a toy. Luckily my wife my made sure to reinforce that feeling!

I actually concentrated on 1/32 and 1/72 for the next few years and the next 1/18 I picked up was the Avenger a year ago. That was about 30 pieces and hundreds of dollars later...

Most guys here are going smaller, but I find that 1/18 really gets my blood pumping in a way the 1/32 can't. I think it is just the sheer size; my Hornet has MUCH more presence than my smaller scale Phantom, paint and detail notwithstanding.

I got the original P-51. It seems like I got something else that day too, but I can't remember what it was. Maybe a Tiger or some figures or both?

first 1/18

Post by ARMY GROUP 1 » Fri Jan 04, 2008 9:09 pm

My first 1/18 item was a lone German action 18 figure purchased in November 2001. After opening the box, i was impressed enough to go back to the hobby shop on the same day and get the other 5 in the set. In the next few weeks i went on the net to see if i could find a German vehicle in the same 1/18 scale and found the 21st century Panther and shortly afterwards the Groundpounders site, the fore runner to our present site. The rest is history with 500+ figures and 100+ vehicles to date.

Mine was the original P-51 with it's nasty landing gear. I had never heard of 21st Century till a good friend of mine called me and told me of these cool larger models he saw at TRUs. I went out and got the Mustang right away, and have not stopped since. :D

I went to a hobby shop that was owned by a buddy of mine . He had a mint in box trop snake stuka and spinach 109 MIB as well. He said if I buy them seperate he wanted $45 each for them. If I got them together at the same time he said $40 each . So I got both. The next thing I got was a grey Tiger at TRU. That was when the addiction started. I think drugs would have been better. Ok maybe not. 8)
Kirk Douglas : Mine hit the ground first
John Wayne : Mine was taller

My first XD was the White 12 Me-109 from TRU, when I was a kid. I loved 109s, so I got it for a birthday present. It's kind of beat up, but I'm hoping to restore it. Just needs a landing gear and tail landing gear, the guns and antenna I can make myself. That was the only one until recently...

Last year, right before summer I bought a 1:32 Stuka with the yellow nose, and was addicted. I've been hunting and hunting ever since. I have grown back into 1:18 also... :)

My first was the D-Day P-38. Then I didn'y buy anything else for another year or so until I found a P-47 Peg O My Heart at WM. Once new stuff started showing up at WM, I was all in. :D

OLIFANT, you will find a small part of my army under this sites customs/mods section. Scroll down the page until you find my made up name...Kurts Kamera Korner. Currently has 18000 hits, which inspires me to continue with this great forum.
As soon as i have the 88's i intend to put pressure for a towing tractor being 8t halftrack like the 21st 1/32. That is what i have wanted from day one. That towing an 88 would be my show piece, the wow factor, assisted by 6 in all of course.

My first XD plane was the NKK Spitfire way back in… July 2007! Some twenty odd models later I'm still trying to catch up.

This hobby is certainly addictive as most of us well know. :D What started on a whim with just that fig (Kurt), and perhaps a few others has now become my obsession. I used to be, and still am of course a big time TREKKER, and my Star Trek collection was my talk about hobby whenever anybody would ask. But for the last some odd years its been XD and it's competition, ie Dragon, BBI, ect... And now looks like FOV as well. I just can't get enough of these little pieces of plastic crack! Tankgirl and I still go to the local toy shows to find Trek items but always leave feeling a little dissapointed not seeing any XD or the like at these get togethers. I still collect limited GI-Joe items as well, but alas the vintage items go for rather large $$$$'s So for me its "XD for life." Maybe I'll get an XD tat.   jk of course.

When 21C was just doing 1/6 stuff I always looked at it and thought the WWII theme was cool but 1/6 just too big and doll-like for my taste.
However, the first day I walked into a TRU and saw the first batch of un-named WWII1/18 guys I had to buy one. I am pretty sure it was the German officer with the pistol. The next day I went back and bought the rest. I don't think I have all the figures that have been released, but I have gotten most of them.
It's a disease and I need a 12 step program.

Yeah, I know that I'm missing a couple of the figs as well. But I'd say 99.9% of em I have. Many many duplicates of each I assure you.

The Panther was my first, while looking for a birthday gift for my Godson I saw the panther. That did it, I switched from collecting 1:16 to 1:18th. I went back to TRU a few days later and got another and made a Jadgpanther. This was winter '00-'01 soon after that I found Groundpounders on the net and here we are.
