The bottom lettering is may be the planes initial markings after the factory, once a pilot and number and group is established, they painted over it, the white squiggle means 4th group. My problem with it is the white 2 and the squiggle are to high, they should be more centered on the cross. Also this is where a good modeler could make the plane look 1000% better, the bottom letters/numbers should be faded and weathered, they were painted on long before the white ones were painted over and yet they appear to have been painted on 10 minutes latter. Yes Snake man is right, there is no reason for the black spot on the bottom of the cowling, that is an air intake, no exhaust comes out the back either, that is unless the engine is on fire [/quote]

Exit areas on aircraft with a lot of service time on them tend to get staining and streaks from minor leaks of oil or glycol, but intake areas never get that problem. Liquids tend to make streaks, rather than the type of stains that the model has. (Been around aircraft over 40 years !!) I still think it looks great, though !!

Mine arrived at the office today. I couldn't resist, and took a few minutes to open the box. Wonderful model, and very nice packaging. But at six birds, I can say I have enough 109s now!

Don't have anything made by BBI, but I'm thinking about getting one of these.
Seem like a lot of people say these are better than 21st's 109s?
The photos certainly look good.

1st group - no marking
2nd group - one horizontal bar
3rd group - one vertical bar
4th group - squiggle

It is a much superior tooling in nearly every way compared to their 21c counterpart, but it also compliments them as a different model variant. Discounting the variations between the G2 and G6 B-109s, both the S1 and S2 BBI Bf-109s really have the edge in accuracy, detail, and a few cool features like the opening engine. The plane also looks more "pulled together" than the 21c version with its correct landing gear and correct radio mast/antenna than the 21c Bf-109 as well. For me, the most serious drawbacks with the BBI Bf-109 are the over-riveted surfaces (hard to see though), the canopy which doesn't lock, and the tiny pilot figure.

Thanks for the additional info on the BBI version. Guess I'll be buying myself a birthday present.
