Wish 21C would release a 1:18 Viet Nam era M113 like the 1:32 one they're coming out with. But if they don't, I'll tweak my OD modern one like some of you are.

It is my understanding that M113s in Viet Nam were subject to damage by hollow charge RPGs. The fix was to place rolls of chain link fencing on the sides of the hull to deflect or cause the round to detonate before hitting the armor(aluminum). Kind of reminds one of the "Thoma" shields used by the Germans in WW2.

By the way, I wasnt too impressed with my plain OD M113 either. I was suprised how crude the figures were. The M2 .50 machine gun is a more crude casting and assembly(bent in the middle) than on past models. Compare the gun to the one on the US halftrack and you will see what I mean. Oh well.

Question for those knowledgeable on modern: How accurately does the 21c M113 depict real M113's that are being used in Iraq right now. I'm not asking about it's quality as a model but the basic accuracy of equipement etc.

For example do they generally carry that much gear on the hull sides, is it correct to have no gun shield for the 50 cal etc.

Thanks for any help...

oh and what uniform would the vehicle's commander wear? Would it standard fatigues or something else? What type of helmet.

thanks again... :)

Ihave seen some pictures at www.afvnews.ca that shows some M113 with a new sheild kit that resembles the ACAV sets from the Vietnam era.

The link to the M113 in Iraq looks pretty much like the 21c M113 I recently got. Except the top hatch on the link picture shows it is a two part deal that opens to the sides. The 21c M113 has the single piece "suicide" door that opens to the rear. I remember the M113 I was assigned to in Germany during the early 80"s had the one piece door and if you stopped suddenly and that door wasn't locked down it would come forward and close hard enough to give your grandchildren a headache or kill you.

The trap door of death can be seen in this next picture. Also the 21c M113 has the fuel tank extentions in the rear like the ones in the earlier link picture.
