Looks Like "Kilroy" has just arrived

Post by JOC » Fri Jul 27, 2007 2:34 pm

Had to tell you all that the most beautiful Silver Bird just flew over my house here in Bellingham, WA. A BOEING B-17...............
Our small aviation heritage museum is having an open house tomorrow and this plane is the star attraction. Damn, she was gleaming in the sunlight and the sounds of those engines were amazing. Maybe it could be an indication that maybe, just maybe, 21st will come out with its B-25?????????
Just had to share with all of you.

Speaking of B-17s...

On Wednesday, a B-17 buzzed a popular mountain lake in the Sierras near Fresno, CA (known as Shaver Lake), causing quite a stir among some of the boaters and jetskiiers

My family has a house up there and I wish I'd been out fishing on the lake to see it

I guess it's the relative absence nowadays of aircraft with those old engines that helps make them sound so cool to us now.
That, and they just sound like power to me. I still cannot imagine what it must have sounded like when hundreds of heavy bombers massed for missions during WWII.
To those on the receiving end I guess it sounded like what it really was---the end of the world.

A JU-52 transport flew over my house a couple years ago, those 3 engines were quite noisy, even at I'd guess 10k feet. Ends up it's owned by a guy in OKC. Not everyday a vintage nazi bird flies over.

If you want to hear what power sounds like come to: "Gathering of Mustangs"

btw I got a ride in a TBM, and made a torpedo run on a sailboat, with Wildcat escort.

The B-17 "Sentimental Journey" that is here in Bellingham was giving 45-minute rides for $425. Must have been a lot of takers as she was over my house at least 5 to 7 times on Saturday and today. BTW she had a Mustang flying with her as an escort.

Pretty steep, but it's more or less the same in every museum I guess. The AAM in LI charges $450 (last time I asked).

I would love to take a ride, but thats too much for me.
