BBI Zero Paint Color Question
Greetings:
Does anyone know what would be a color match for model paint for the BBI Pearl Harbor Zero. I recently acquired one loose in really good shape but the radio mast needs some touchup paint. Was thinking of doing it flat black or silver but it should probably match the airplane.
Does anyone have a match for the white-green color of the Zero?
Thanks
Corey

Re: BBI Zero Paint Color Question
............ try Tamiya X-14 or XF-14 J.A. Grey ... if that's too green , then try X-12 or XF-12 J.N. Grey.

I would go for a lighter grey. The BBI zero definitely didn't have any greenish tinge to it...

Yes it is almost mint green.
I got a perfect match using Home Depot paint for some replacement stabilizers I did for someone on the forum.

Re: BBI Zero Paint Color Question
I'd either try the Tamiya paints recommended by the other members or go the Home Depot paint matching route as Pickelhaube suggested. Home Depot will give you a ton more paint for about $3 - far more than you will get from a model paint bottle costing the same amout.
I've found that Tamiya tends to have the colors that best match the stock ones found on our models if you find the closest shade. Testors paint doesn't quite seem to have that attribute. There could be a slight shade difference, but not really a significant one with the right Tamiya paint.

I did a custom zero. I held up the two shades (Subiru Saki) and the XF14. Great match! Applied using an airbrush.

I've been wanting to buy one of the PH Zero's haven't seen one in person, except on eBay. But going off pictures I would say try Tamiya J.N. Gray or J.N. Green-Gray.

Re: BBI Zero Paint Color Question
Greetings:
Took a shot at repainting the radio mast. Actually went with Tamiya XF-21(Sky) over XF-14. The Pearl Harbor Zero is a bit green/gray in tint compared to the Sakai one. BBI did change the color a bit for the two versions. It is a tad greenier than the original color, but take a look and see if you notice. Also took the time to pry apart the stablizers and switch them around so the Japanese writing was on the top. Think she looks pretty good!

Re: BBI Zero Paint Color Question
Nice job with the radio mast repaint and other repairs. Glad you were able to get one of these as well, as this scheme tends to be on the rarer end of 1:18 scale aircraft since it was a Badcat Exclusive and all. The BBI "Pearl Harbor" Zero is a pretty plane, no doubt. A tooling that BBI did very well from the start.
For all the "new" collectors that have come since the days nearly 8 years ago when we all were so elated to finally have a Zero in 1:18, here's a few photos of the actual plane the BBI model depicts:
The aircraft was flown by Pilot Officer 1c Takeshi Hirano and based on the IJN carrier Akagi. The aircraft was shot down/crashed at Fort Kamehameha, near Pearl Harbor, during the attack, aparently striking a palm tree on its way in.
The wreck as found where it crashed:
The wreckage transfered into a hanger after the attack:

Re: BBI Zero Paint Color Question
How did you flip the stabilizers? Can it be done without having to glue anything? I didn't even know they were reversed, and now I 've got to fix them someday. Especially after I went through the trouble of fixing the balances on the wings...

Re: BBI Zero Paint Color Question
Greetings:
This is how you flip the stablizers. Hope you can follow this how-to.
Take both rear wing/stablizer parts off the Zero.
You will notice if you look where the tab is to attach this piece to the plane, the stablizer is made of three pieces. The top half, the lower half and the actual moving control part. You will see the line where the top half joins the lower half near the tab.
Very gently take a small flathead screwdriver and go between the halves. Push gently and pry the two halves apart. They fit together with tabs on the inside and the very end is lightly glued. They should pop apart. Then you will have two halves seperate and and the control piece by itself. Do this for each stablizer.
The control piece is what needs to be switched so the Japanese characters are top side. Take the right one, flip it and put it with the left parts. Do the same for the left one moving it to the right.
Line up control piece, line up the halves and you should be able to push them back together. I lined mine up then put glue on the tabs and the pushed them together to keep them together. Now you have the two stablizers on the correct side.
(I would post pictures but I doubt I can get mine apart again since I glued the inside tabs to keep them together)
Hope this helps

Re: BBI Zero Paint Color Question
* Thanks for the tip Corey , I just fixed mine and it was a snap !
........... + I didn't even need a [flat-head] screw driver or any glue. I just pulled , flipped and re-inserted.

Re: BBI Zero Paint Color Question
Yeah, I just pulled them out and swapped them with no problem. That was super easy, no glue required!
