Grunt,
Nice pics and pyrotechnics.
I hope those little guys didn't take out the neighbor's garage or pet before they took out that Sherman...
Does this 1/18 scale Panzerbüchse 41 work on a 1/6th Tank?

Grunt1 that's just cool! Gotta say it's made me go in the backyard twice already and think about what I can put together. Great work!

Awesome. tThe back yard can do wonders if you give it a chance.

The first Panzerbuche arrived in the mail and I quickly slapped some paint on it and got these shots just before the sun went down. The pyrotechnics are wadded up copier paper with a light coating of spraypaint sitting about a foot behind the tank and as a last minute idea, turned out really well.

I'll post the link to buy the PB for anyone interested and some assembly instructions. So far this is easily the cheapest and easiest to put together kit so far.

Very nice pics but sorry, the PzB 41 2.8mm "squeese bore" anti tank gun was just too weak a shell to be used against WW2 armor. It was not used against WW2 armor after 1941. It could never take out a Sherman.

After 1941 it was used as mobile artillery against personnel and soft skinned vehicles by airborne troops and as extra firepower support mounted on SdKfz 250 and 251 halftracks.

Very neat weapon that I happen to like. A super metal version in 1/6 is very cheap.

My guess is that those FJ's are smart cookies and used the high ground to pop one through the engine deck. 2.5" penetration at 400 yards, easily enough to disable with a shot through the 1" engine grate which also held the gas tanks.

How they saw it through the 14 foot high Greek elephant grass I'll never know. :P

actually, the Panzerbüchse 41 could knock out most any wwii tank at close ranges; even KV's and JS's. Could certainly penetrate the side armour of a sherman at close range. It was a pretty nifty weapon, the main problem was the constant shortage of tungstan needed for the shells. It was a short range weapon, much like the panzerschreck and panzerfaust were and as a result was risky to use. It produced alot less smoke than the other two, so was better in that regard.

The literature on this very neat little weapon says that with "a liitle luck" a heavy tank could be taken out at the short effective range. The gun was 2.8cm at the breech and squeezed down to 20mm at the end of the barrel. It would take a lot of luck for a 20mm shell to take out a Sherman.

I'm not saying never, just with "a little luck".

TTT, this is not just a 20mm cannon, This thing had a very high-velocity, much higher than a standard 20mm and the ammo had a tungsten carbide core (a soft steel casing and a magnesium alloy ballistic cap. The core was 40 mm long and 10.9 mm in diameter and contained about 9% tungsten. The Sherman's hull sides were only 38–45 mm thick and were 90 degrees (no slope). This thing could penetrate approx 60 mm of armor at 90 degrees at 300 yards so for a Sherman they would not have to get super close. This thing would turn a Sherman into swiss cheese but would not need to as one shot into the engine area would most likley cause a fire and explosion.

The barrel is 20mm at the end. It was called a squeeze barrel and started at 2.8mm at the breech and squeezed down to 20mm. The shell was more powerful than the standard 20mm, but the size was still 20mm when it left the muzzle.

I have never read or even heard of this gun taking out a Sherman. There are cases of Ruskie heavy tanks being taken out with lucky shots from this gun, but I take that to be desperate measures by the Germans. Against American and Brit Sherman's there were plentiful hand held anti tank weapons and anti tank guns much bigger than this 2.8mm gun.

I would be interested in any successful action of this gun against Sherman's. I said I like this gun and have one mounted on my SdKfz 251 in 1/6. We have one in 1/18 mounted on the bridging "251" halftrack.... very nice weapon.
