B-25 blues :(

Post by mosquitomania » Thu Jul 10, 2008 12:04 pm

I have given up on the 18th scale B-25. Next to the Mosquito, the B-25 is my favorite plane, and I really wish we would have seen one in 18th scale. Wooo is me Wooo is me.  :x

That Hobby Lobby B-25 is one cool RC. I can almost see one comming in low in the back yard to buz wifes cats.

No harm intended - just a good hair raising experience.

How hard?

Post by parrish333 » Fri Jul 11, 2008 11:41 am

That B-25 is a beauty, but how hard is it to assemble? The website said "Assembly will take 20-40 hours depending on the degree of detail that you choose". I know that a lot of that is installing the R/C gear which most of us don't care about.

Aferg: I think you did buy this one, right? How long to get it just looking good as a 1:18 static model?

Thanks!

it's already painted and parts are minimal but you'll have to cut out and install vacuform clear parts, paint and install the guns, apply decals etc. Less work that building a model kit.....i would say 5-7 hours tops. If you're going to get one get the detailed kit, which is the more expensive one. It comes with all the nice little details that will make it look good as a static piece. Unless you're prepared to do a lot of work scratch building an undercarriage, you'll have to have it as an in flight display piece.

Oh and by the way it's a bit overscale. About 1/17.1 scale. 5% too big.

I was really looking forward to a 1:18 B-25 from 21st, but I thought when I heard about it "yeah right"

I do think that given the way things are going in the 1:18 market, 21st could at least do twin engine bombers in 1:32. I think they would sell very well.
Think of it:
B-25
HE-111
BF-110
JU-88
C-47
B-26

Heck, if they really wanted to go to town, they could even do some four engine bombers in 1:32

Though I have almost every aircraft so far ever made in 1:18 scale, and it is my favorite, I still have been buying the 1:32 planes from the beginning, and pretty much see a glimmer of hope for that size with the major retailers.

Aferg is spot on with his response. Buy the detailed kit, it comes with all the interior details, and if you have ever built a plastic model you should have no problems at all. Just remember it's made of foam and you may have to use some touch up paint when you are done and you will be just fine. I have one laying around, but I plan on flying mine and haven't had enough time to build it yet. Overall it is a very sharp looking plane for either flight or just display.

Doubtful that 21st will make any four-engine bombers in 1/32. Those bombers will have more details on them, plus they're gonna be as big as a 1/18th aircraft...maybe even bigger!

They have a hard enough time producing a 1/18 King Tiger, which is actually smaller and have less detail than a 1/32 four-engine bomber.

I gave up too. I'll build and paint a 1/48th version for now. Who knows, if they get around to one it might cost an arm and a leg!

Yeah it's doubtful, but not impossible. I would pay good money for one.

I've been checking out what some of the model companies are making in 1:32, and it's really suprising what's out there. A few twin engine bombers, and some jets, which by the way are as long as some of what the four engine bombers would be. The F-4 Phantom is as long as a 1:18 scale WWII fighter. There is even a Tomcat kit in 1:32.
Somebody is going to do it one day, though it will probably be a model company most likely.

there's a ju-88 kit coming in 1/32 and there was a b-25 kit made many years ago; goes for big bucks now. Tomcat kits in 1/32 have been around since the early 80's.

There are a few problems with kits; one is guys like me with ten thumbs can't make them look good, and the cost is astronomical. I can buy a highly detailed 1/48 die cast for less than the 1/32 model kits.

If we were screaming over a $100 1/18 KT try buying a 1/32 kits for more!

Yeah, some of those kits are way expensive. There's one (I forget who) of a 1:32 Avenger, close to 300 parts, highly detailed, even metal flaps and rudders. Some of the jets, whoah, are priced as high as a 1:18 BBI jet when you could get them new.

However you can get a twin engine Bristol Beaufighter pretty cheap, and a P-38 Lightning.

What I was interested in was the ones you can't get yet in the 1:32 pre-painted line. Though I don't know, it's been quite a while since I built a model, so I might be all thumbs too, though most of what I did was 1:72, so the bigger scale can't be too bad. Think I would start off on the lower end. Sure would like to build a Hawker Typhoon I saw, or even a Hurricane.

Hard to find 1:18 scale

Post by jhogan » Wed Sep 17, 2008 7:33 am

I did not think the B-25 would be available any time soon. Like most of you, I waited about 2 years for the Avenger release. I just found my Hellcat in August after looking for about a year.

I was able to find most of the releases of new aircraft soon after hitting the stores, but It is getting very hard to find 1:18 aircraft in Central Illinois.

I am so excited for all the people that have asked for the B-25 in 1:18.

I cannot wait to get one of these for my office!

Now Admiral can take this off the drawing room table. This one was going to be expensive for us to produce. But believe it or not cheaper then the F-4. So I think we can expect a price lower then the 21st’s F-4. The B-25 has a lot of plastic but is a lot easier to tool and has a much more straight forward production.

I cannot wait. Great choice of models!

Regards,
Jason

Looks like you better get that one back on the drawing room table, along with the Mig-21 :D :D :D :D :D

We know a 1/18 B-25 has around a 4' wingspan with a record high price for a detailed 21C model. I would honestly think $200 would be cheap for a 4' 21C 1/18 B-25.

So how big is a 1/32 wingspan for a B-25?

For the big planes, B-25, Mossie, twin Gerry planes, even my wish list planes like the B-26 Marauder , P-61 Black Widow (after the B-25, my personal favorite), I would buy in 21C 1/32 if accurate and detailed.

OK, so I'm a big 21C guy with only a few planes among my groundpounder toys but I'd let the moths free by opening my wallet for some of those twins.
