Interesting info on the F-104s in Viet Nam. I thought they only saw combat in some war between India and Pakistan in the '70s. In that conflict, the F-104 still wasn't all that great in close-quarters air-to-air combat on account of its tendency to stall (due to the small wing area) if it was put through too extreme of a manuver. It could make one heck of a dash to get out of danger, however!
The F-104's ineffectiveness in anything other than a high-speed interceptor role (or research testbed) coupled with its tricky handling characteristics are some of the reasons why I think it saw such a limited and short service with the USAF.
Although it is a great-looking and easily recognizable aircraft, I still feel that 21c should have made a jet that could better compliment its Viet Nam or Modern line.

I did that to my old flat P-51.centone wrote:(OT) Thinking about natural metal body planes made me remember that someone (Corey?) had tracked down some foil coating system for model airplanes and was planning to see how it worked on XD planes. Any update on how it worked out? I'd love to do a Mustang with something that really looks like metal.
Looks ok. It would look nice if I had took more time with it.
I may do it again, on the F-104.
Now that will be sweet.

All this F104 talk had me look up an article I remember reading in International Air Power Review Vol 12.. There's a 9 page article on the Starfighter in Vietnam. Quite a few bare metal pics of its early deployment. Yes 1 did get shot down by a Chinese fighter. However they had a good reputation in ACM which is why they were sent to Vietnam.
From the article "If the Starfighter is judged against other US aircraft for its ability to sustain battle damage, to deliver heavy bomb loads or to conduct operations in bad weather, then the F104 rates as an 'also-ran'. If, however, the F104C is judged for its ability to deter MIGs, to ensure the safety of the aircraft entrusted to its escort or to out-perform any aircraft in existence at the time, the 'Zip-4' is unrivalled!"
It became my favorite jet after we were buzzed by a Luftwaffe 104 while I was stationed in Germany. One of the coolest things I've ever seen, low and fast.

Found a picture of a 1/18 German F-104 upcoming from 21c on Dirk's site.
http://www.warbirdmodelle.de/images/big/f-104_g-1.jpg
Look under 'Vorschau' on the left www.warbirdmodelle.de
Also, if you scroll down the home page, on the left you'll see:
Geplant im Maßstab 1:18:
ME-262,
Zero-Fighter,
F-86 Sabre,
MIG-15
Bf-110 (ab Anf. 2006)
Geplant means 'planned' or 'upcoming'. Notice the Zero fighter. Maybe Dirk knows something we don't?

Upcoming 1/18
I thought we knew bbi was doing a Zero. It's been noted a few times in different threads.
The S3 104 is by far the coolest....

?
I thought the list just says 1/18. And you can bet they're making a Zero, it's past speculation.
