ebay question:

Post by dragon53 » Tue Mar 18, 2008 1:27 am

A question for ebay experts:

Can anyone tell me why the following F-86 "The Huff" sold at such a low price ($38.72 delivered) when bidding began and then most of the bidders stopped bidding and missed out on a good bargain on a highly-regarded 1/18 jet?

The seller said it's "mint in box" but the box has a little wear/tear on it and the seller has a very good track record of 99.7%.

I've noticed that other highly-regarded 1/18 replicas like the 21st 1/18 Sherman and BBI F-16 draw many bids at the last second, but not this Huff.

Any suggestions on why did most bidders suddenly lost interest in this Huff?

From what it looks to me, somebody got an awesome deal. I don't know why it went for so low. Just one of those things....

Listed in an inaccurate category is my best guess. I would never look in the diecast section for that. The people who are looking for diecast don't want plastic... so it doesn't get high bids, and someone walks away with a great deal.

The listing local was one thing but these have been out for a while. The market has been saturated. This happend to the Panther ambush the white nose Spitfire and some of the Fw-190s. After a couple of years they will come back 2 to 4 times the original selling price. I won several Panthers off of e-bay for $36 and white nose Spits for $26 without shipping.

Here's another odd ebay F-86 Huff that just ended. Look at the bids---one bidder jacked up the price repeatedly, then never bids again.
Why are people bidding for a bargain Huff then don't bid again?

If you look at the automatic bids, you can see that "carlagrnbay" put in a bid on the 14th that "1***1" wasn't willing to keep going over.

A good price, but there are frequent bargains out there.

I think what happened is four-five months ago WM clearances all of their 1/18 AC; I picked up quite a few for $15-25. Capitalists we are I think everyone bought these thinking they would sell them on e-bay and make big dollars.

I have seen this with other sales. Squadron/Signal had a big sale on many of their "In Action" titles and e-bay was immediately swamped.

Just my guess though.

The Huff

Post by dcmacharlie » Wed Mar 19, 2008 9:03 pm

Hi i I am the one that bought the Huff for 38.72 on E-bay I was looking for 1:18 scale aircraft and they had about 30 of them most I have and the price on the ones I do not have are way to High, over 250 for the F-18 crazy I do not need it that bad, most you can get for a better deal on the online stores if you shop a little, anyway I looked at the bid price 21.00 for the Huff and how much time was left , it was like 4 minutes so I set up everything and when the time got to 2 min 30 sec I made a bid thinking if someone tried to outbid me they would not have enough time, and it worked I got the bird for a good deal but mark my work that does not happen to me very often just got lucky I guess. Love the forum and all the members with so much aircraft knowledge, very impressive I learn something new every day. You guys rock!!!!! :) :blueangel:

As someone said earlier, it all has to do with the market. The "Huff" F-86s - based on reports from this board - got a very wide distribution at Wal Mart last year. Two stores in my area had a number of them. So, they were readily avaliable initially at the $40 Wal Mart price, which itself is a good deal. Add to that the fact that the planes really didn't sell well, that Wal Mart ordered even more of them, and then discounted them to $25 or less in some places. The F-86 is a wonderful plane and certainly worth its full retail price, but because of the Wal Mart shenanigans, collectors got their fill and thus the plane won't bring in a high ebay price for a few years until they are all gone.
