Re: Rebuild of BBI P-51...

Been following this at LSP as well as here. You're definitely in the top tier of modelers on that forum; hope to be as good as you all when I is all growed up. CAT I'm glad you looked in and thank you for your far too gnerous comment. I don't do anything special other than to invest a lot of time a...

Re: Rebuild of BBI P-51...

The last issue to be dealt with in terms of fuselage/tail section geometry is the bottom pan at its articulation point with the rudder. You can see by the photo the flat nature of the original and the result of the corrective action. Because the bottom pan is a lamination, is leaves plenty of materi...

Re: Rebuild of BBI P-51...

Two mods now needed to be done. The stretch plug would need to be made and the bottom pan would need to come off. The tail halves were joined permanently at this point. Pins were temporarily installed in the tail section receivers and the plug was added in place. The plug is a stack of .250" square ...

Re: Rebuild of BBI P-51...

Pivoting the entire tail section now thows the bottom pan out of alignment. This proved to be a good thing since the bottom is badly formed, in that, its flat but should be round. This also impacts the bottom fairing of the rudder which would need reshaping. One must also consider how to accurately ...

Re: Rebuild of BBI P-51...

As noted earlier, all is fairly good back to STA 248. The tail plane geometry matches up fairly well but its too far forward. Meaning, there is a considerable section of fuselage missing. Note, on the drawing, the note states not to remove the bottom pan. Initially the plan was cut aut along the bot...

Re: Rebuild of BBI P-51...

Greetings All, The preceding finishes up the easy part. This next segment will deal with the fuselage and the make or break aspect of this effort...the empennage. The initial layout revealed a very large discreprncy in LOA. The exact same discrepency exists in the Trumpeter 24th scale kit. Otherwise...

Re: JSI Tomcat - Super Detailing???

Steve Not to late at all. I've painted over Future with lacquer once the future was fully dry(24hrs)with no ill effect. In your case, since the frame is already painted, you could remove the mask, dip it, and, ,et it sit over night on a paper towel. Next day, mask it and over spay with flat. Just ge...

Re: Rebuild of BBI P-51...

Now that the nose rework is complete, something needed to be done about the exhaust stack shroud. Their purpose was to prevent hot exhaust gas from getting into the engine compartment. Often times however, they were removed so it can be modeled either way. I chose to go with the shrouded exhaust sta...

Steve,

Yup, we are probably in the background of each others photos. Like i said, the world keeps getting smaller.

The Canopy is looking good. I like the rivet detail. Have you given it a dip in Future floor wax?

Re: JSI Tomcat - Super Detailing???

Steve, If you were at the Grove for 17.5 years, we had to have bumped into each other at some point. Surely you date back to Col. Lahocky's days. I spent much time on the ramp shooting his Hogs and going on practice CSAR missions with his guys and the L.I. A.N.G. H-60's. He loved photos of his guys ...

Re: JSI Tomcat - Super Detailing???

Steve, My compliments were well served. This WILL be a real looker once done. I know this type of project eats up a tremendous slab of time, but the results are of a very special moment. Steve, Ive just gone through your postings (Im new here). Your execution of this rebuild is most impressive. Re: Rebuild of BBI P-51...

The panel splits were next penciled onto the nose along with the fastener locations. In scale, the Dzus fasteners come out to be .047" in diameter. Care and a lite touch needs to be used when applying the panel splits. They shouldnt be wide, deep troughs like the original. Its time consuming and dif...

The intake tunnel for the super charger is a vac form duplicate of the balsa plug you see in the mouth of the intake. Re: Rebuild of BBI P-51...

To effect the modification, several layers of .020 sheet stock were laminated into the opening, such that the opening became undersized. Once the welds were fully cured, the opening was slowly reopened and reshaped with files. This is the form used to rework the intake and the resultant new intake s...

SUPER CHARGER INTAKE OPENING and TUNNEL Now that the exhaust stack fairing aperture has been replaced, attention turned to the super charger chin intake.
