momentarily delurking [covered up in work-work including lots of overseas time, and some new non-1/18 3D printing projects in what little spare time I have]. I've been following this thread avidly and agree that all the hints make the Harrier the only choice -- and that it's a great choice. If the q...

Re: Life, 3-D Printing and Everything

Welcome back! The new replicator is interesting. Here are some hi res pictures of printed objects. Improved over the prior version but the quality is not where SLS or SLA are at the moment. [snip] While you've been busy, a lot of new printers have come out. The two projects I'm watching the most cl...

Life, 3-D Printing and Everything

As I said when I briefly stopped by a few months ago, I had some disruption in my personal life at the first part of the year. Not long after that, I got posted to work in Hong Kong, where I was until very recently. That assignment is going to have a good deal of follow-up, which will require me to ...

Re: New Merit 1/18 DAUNTLESS DISCUSSION

[First, a personal note: I've had to completely abandon all personal projects (including my beloved V-2) for many months due to a death in the family and abrupt changes in my real-world work. But I managed to find time to order the Coral Sea Dauntless.] My Dauntless arrived at the office yesterday a...

:?: $1000 Why is the cost of 3D printing so high. I thought it would be the way of the future.....folks printing 1:18 King Tigers and things like that. It's print time. The very high resolution printing you get from Shapeways is sloooow. While the machine is printing this, it can't be printi...

Bottles yes, apparently but not the rattle cans, at least not of TS-3 dark yellow. Ugh. Or do you see some? Oh, you're right. I see lots of bottles, that's what I use. Soon though, soon! I hope so. Other than the bottles showing up, do we have any reason to believe the rattle cans will be available...

Re: 1/18 V2

A plan, yes. Most of the base will be styrene tubing. The mounting rings will be tough and I've only begun to think a little about how to do them.

At the rate I'm going, it would be well into summer before I tackle this. I imagine it will be an inexpensive add-on kit -- something like $30 or so.

Re: 1/18 V2

I've been struggling with the principle that "the best is the enemy of the good" on the instructions I'd hoped to include with this kit. Getting from 90% of what I'd wanted to do to 100% is taking much, much longer than I'd hoped, as I struggle with dealing with having a real life and a real job tha...

Re: Authentic Models Large Scale Gee Bee Super Sportster Rev

Gorgeous model and a really well-written review. You say the wingspan of the model is 18 inches. Wikipedia says the full-scale wingspan was 25 feet even. This would translate to 18.666 inches in 1/18 -- so is the Authentic Models version slightly under 1/18? If so, that's a shame -- I can never figu...

Re: New 1:18 repaints soon!

I like the looks of this but, given how many zillions of 1/18 P-51s are already out there, the success and impact of this will depend mightily on price. I'm with Pickel -- ~$70 seems about right to me . . .

Re: BBI announces f-18c

My two cents about the price. As a buyer, naturally I'd like the price to be lower. But, as has been pointed out, I have a choice -- buy or not buy. In hindsight, it seems pretty clear to me that the prices of 1/18 models back in the Golden Age were too low in the only sense that one can ever judge ...

Short answer: P-47 Eileen Long Answer: I NEVER went into a Target or TRU or a Walmart back in the Golden Age. But I did go into hobby shops -- to buy kits and materials for the model-building I was into back then, 1/25 cars. I remember that I saw a FEW 1/18 planes back then in hobby shops. They seem...

Re: Gots my F-104

The F-104 is one of my favorite planes of all time, for reasons that aren't exactly "rationale." First, it's an almost pure Kelley Johnson design, and anything Kelley Johnson was involved in had a distinct "look and feel" about it -- I think of him as the "Burt Rutan of his day" (or, probably more a...

Re: BBI announces f-18c

I like the aggressor schemes -- they're a nice change from the more common low-viz. On the other hand, there's a lot of potential for other interesting variations, including Canadian, Australian, etc. Someone does need to do some new nozzles -- it's be a good "garage builder" seller. I'll probably g...

Re: A story we should all take a minute to read.

Just as in life, I think that there are far more positive stories out there, but unfortunately anything negative gets all the attention. Totally agree. I contracted the 1/18 disease after the Golden Age and have built up my collection almost entirely through purchases of "used" planes, probably hal...

I don't think concrete would be the correct colour for those barriers. They look to me like, in real life, they are molded out of some material, maybe a heavy plastic and then filled with sand or water...there seems to be a cap on the top of them. I don't know what colour they should be....maybe re...

Mine arrived today. I had very high expectations -- and they were greatly surpassed. Stunningly good work. I don't know when I'll actually build it, but I know I won't be able to resist cleaning up the little bits of flash so all the main parts can fit snugly together and I can get it put up to admi...
